Who are the best and worst college football announcers/analysts?

Well, our buddy Mandel has come out with his top list of football announcers.

I agree with a lot (Corso sucks, I like Nessler usually), but of course in his "top 5 calls" he puts in Desmond Howard and the PI call in the Fiesta, but no Musberger sending us to the title game. Still, it's an interesting read.

I am surprised that Fouts was able to make any call during the Fiesta bowl since had Kellen Sr's dick in his mouth.

Personally I love the Herbstreit/Tirico/Corso team on ESPN Thursday nights. They're about the only ones that can make those CUSA/WAC/MWC games real interesting. When I hear them I know the weekend is right around the corner.

Yeah, Fout's whining about "baaaaad call" is great when it was clearly proved later that the call was indeed right. Yet more proof of what a phony Puckeye fan you are...not to mention total asshole. Why don't you go weave a carpet or something, Kashmir?

5. Keith Jackson: Make no mistake, if this were a ranking of the top all-time announcers, Jackson would take up all five spots. He was the voice of college football for nearly 40 years. Sadly, though, his performances have gone sharply downhill since aborting his planned retirement in 1999, most notably a dreadful showing in what should have been a classic broadcast of the Ohio State-Miami Fiesta Bowl. It's still a joy, though, just to hear his voice, these days mostly on West Coast games.

FIVE GUYS I'D LIKE TO SEE IN THE BOOTH

1. Chris Spielman: The ex-Bills linebacker currently does college football for ESPN. I heard him call a fake field goal before it happened. Why? Because he saw the kicker spending extra time talking to the coach on the sidelines before he went out. Spielman was on top of everything, all game long. Some network would score a real coup by hiring him, but I don't give them credit for figuring out something like this.

Looks like Spiels is getting some love after all.

Speaking of Brad Nessler. How many of you remember back in 1991 when CBS was doing the play by play of the NCAA Division 1-AA championship
game between YSU and Marshall. I suppose not many of you do, but I remember that very well. Brad Nessler was doing the play by play then and thought he was thru or maybe even forgot who he was. But when I saw him doing the Texas Tech game in 2002, it kind of jogged my memory and then I knew who he was. It would be interesting to get a take from him on how he feels about Jim Tressels travels from YSU to Ohio State.

This can be wide open to past, present; play by play, color, sideline, studio; tv, radio; etc.

My all time fave is Keith Jackson. I liked the way he mixed literary prose and odd colloquialism into his calls. Whenever I think of the phrase "On the Banks of the Olentangy", it's his voice. One of my favorite lines was Keith talking about Matt Wilhelm in the 2003 Fiesta Bowl, "When you've got that many stars on your hat, you're pretty good." And his voice is in The Godfather, Part II. You can't [censored] with that.

Worst? Lee Corso. Whatever ESPN exec who's idea it was to hire Corso may be the only person in the universe who knows less about college football than Lee Corso. Just a complete jackass. I get the impression that he is trying to play the fool, contradicting what everyone else says while throwing in some Dicky V. style spastic enthusiasm. But unlike the Shakespearean fools, who spoke in riddles despite possessing sagacious observation, Corso is a complete boob. I shudder everytime he actually picks the Buckeyes to win.

Gotta go with Brent Musburger. "Holy Buckeye!", "Ginn's wide open folks, wide open. Get out your adding machines, we're under way!" The ways he calls games for some reason gets me pumped!

Worst, have to go with Dan Fouts. Simply put, he's horrible!
