May be time to change the name of this thread
Picked up a copy of the 2009 Athlon Sports College Football Preview at Barnes and Noble today. Of note:
Bucks are 5th and #1 in the Big Ten. We have a lot of reloading to do but middle to end of the top 10 feels about right to me. PSU (7th), MSU (20th), and Iowa (23rd) are in the top 25. Florida beats Oklahoma in a rematch for the championship. Ohio State has the 3rd ranked DL in the position rankings. Notre Dame is ranked (24th), ugh. As far as I know, this kicks off the college football preview mag season. Personally, glad to have something but looking forward to Phil Steele in about a week or so. Note: Please split into its own thread if desired, noticed this thread had both 2007 and 2008 rankings in it so I figured I'd start here and let those in the know move it if needed. Didn't see this in any other threads yet, if already posted, sorry and please disregard. |

Wow. Someone is drinking the ACC kool-aid.
And Okie State #2? Interesting. |

Considering the source, I'm pretty impressed he has the Bucks at 8. He had to get the weak league shot in though didn't he....

If he wins a title this year, he's in the discussion, but people seem to want to accredit that 2006 title solely to him as well.Quote:
Number two? Seriously? They may be very good, but they're still Okie State for Chrissakes.Quote:

Saurian Sagacity: The Official Blog for Inquisitive Florida Gators Fans
I like this site. An obvious point, but a good one none the less. |

That piece on the Big XII hype is very well reasoned. Are you sure the author is a Gator?

The author makes a good point. Of course, in the blog post immediately preceding that he has Georgia at #5 in his preseason poll, which immediately reduces his credibility.

CFN ranks teams based solely on how good they think the teams are. Not based on how they think they'll end up based on their schedule and which games they think they'll win and lose.
[Soapbox] It's how preseason polls should be voted, rather than the self-fulfillling prophecies that the preseason polls that are more predictions than rankings. [/Soapbox] CFN.Preseason.Rankings.1-10 CFN.11-20 Quote:

That said, them and others seem to be giving the benefit of the doubt to a lot of teams who are replacing a QB. Georgia is the most glaring of these to me - they were #13 in the final AP Poll from last season. After losing the top QB in the draft and the top RB in the draft they're now a top-10 or top-5 team? The only program that has shown recently that it can sustain those kind of losses and be as good or better the next season is USC. Everyone else in my mind has to prove it on the field. If Georgia goes out and wins in Stillwater and starts off strong in SEC play then by all means, put them up there. Until then though I think their personnel losses need to be more heavily accounted for when considering how good they are RIGHT NOW. |

Florida No. 1 in coaches' poll
August 7, 2009, 9:23 AM ET
Defending national champion Florida tops the USA Today preseason football coaches' poll, receiving 53 of 59 first-place votes. Texas was second in the poll released Friday, followed by Oklahoma, Southern California, Alabama, Ohio State, Virginia Tech, Penn State, LSU and Mississippi. Texas had four first-place votes, and Oklahoma and Southern California each had one. Virginia Tech and Mississippi are the new names in the coaches' top 10, replacing Oregon and TCU from last season's final poll. Virginia Tech finished last season at No. 14, while Mississippi ended last season 15th. Oklahoma State was ranked 11th in the preseason poll, followed by California, Georgia, Oregon, Georgia Tech, Boise State, TCU, Utah, Florida State and North Carolina. Iowa, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Brigham Young and Oregon State rounded out the Top 25. The SEC led the Top 25 with five teams, with four in the top 10 and Georgia rounding out the conference delegation at No. 13. The Big 12, ACC and Pac-10 all had four teams each, while the Big Ten and Mountain West placed three teams. The Big 12 and Big Ten put two teams each into the top 10. Boise State of the WAC was the highest-ranked non-BCS school ranked in the Top 25, at No. 13. The Top 25 is voted on by a panel of 59 coaches in the Bowl Championship Subdivision, formerly known as Division I-A. The Associated Press preseason Top 25 will be released Saturday, Aug. 22. My initial thoughts:
too high: 5. Alabama (should be around #12-15) 8. Penn St. (should be around #15) 10. Mississippi (should be around #20-25) 14. Oregon (should be around #23-25) 19. Florida St. (should be unranked) too low: 4. USC (should be above OU) 7. Va Tech (should be about #5) 23. Notre Dame (I hate to say it, but should be about #15) 24. BYU (if Boise St. and TCU are in the top 17, BYU should be too) NR. Illinois (should be about #15) |
