The thought crossed my mind, but the humiliation of 42-7 trumped it.

Omg, that is hilarious and a great insult...

My whole point is that the state of Michigan isn't exactly the best place to recruit. There are very few kids in-state who will really help dramatically. Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, California, Florida...those are places RR should be recruiting more heavily.

But for a program like UM those 'very few' should be layups. No one is saying RR has to abandon all else and take care of the home state ONLY..but recognize that the state has actually had some solid talent the last few years...and UM wiffed on a lot of it because they have not bothered to build those relationships. RR doesn't have to have sleep overs at his house and drive their children to school on cold days...he just has to have them in on occasion to see the campus...show some interest in the local talent..attend a game or two and make an effort...then hop a flight to Florida.

I am still trying to understand your point: You think UM is better served to ignore the Michigan talent and enter the fray:

down south with Florida, FSU, Miami

go(ing) back to Cali (her bikini....small....) and compete with USC and UCLA

Go into Texas against...well...everydamnbody.

when all tUM *should* have to do is open the door for many of the Michigan HS kids that are worthy and *then* go battle

UM should be able to clean up in the home state with far less effort and far greater payback than you will ever see in other states...and still have time and resources to pursue out of state kids. Instead it looks like UM is just blowing off UM..which does nothing for their odds in Florida, Cali, or Texas...it just means MSU gets kids UM should have had first right of refusal for. You don't have to take them all..just make a little investment and then take the ones you want.

It is always better to play a home game than a roadie.....that is why they call it home field ADVANTAGE.

PS/EDIT: Bet you would LOVE to get Gardner next year..don't you think that would be easier if his HS program felt and affiliation/affinity for UM? As is it will be a dog fight..and UM might get him...but he is hardly the lean he might be if UM had bothered to cover the home state on occasion rather than jetting off toward the OOS recruiting ring at every opportunity. Do what you got to do to feed the program..but don't ever turn your back on the locals...JMO and I am surprised that anyone would disagree.

I would love to nab Gardner. However, it's known that he's been a life long Buckeye fan. Even if his HS program felt an affinity to UM, that probably isn't strong enough to overcome HIS affinity for OSU, IMO. Then again, who's to say there is no relationship with Gardner's HS. He goes to Inkster HS, and Michigan did just land a 4 star WR by the name of Cam Gordon from that very school this year.

I came across an interesting article on the web about which school recruit from which areas. Analyzing college football recruiting data from 2004-2008 - Andy Staples - SI.com

I couldn't draw any definate trends from the data. I would assume that there was some selection bias in the schools choosen that thwarded analysis of the set in general. However, there was some interesting anticdotal stories.

First off, Michigan has historically had recruits travel a long way. The have the 16th longest recruit travel distance out of 66 schools sampled. All the other schools with greater travel distance (except Notre Dame) have an obvious geographic reason for large travel numbers. West Vigirnia was very similar to Michigan with even few kids coming from in state.

School---------------Avg. Distance-----% within 200-----% in-state-----Wins 2004-08
West Virginia------506.7447619-------40.5-----------------7.9----------------50
Michigan-----------547.2899074--------38------------------23.1---------------39

One would assume that RR would take his West Virgina recruitment to new levels with the national exposure Michigan has. Perhaps his abrasive personality makes it hard to develop local pipelines of talent.

Another interesting observation can be made when you include Ohio State and Pittsburg. For sake of argument lets assume that all four have the same "background" talent level since they are all in about the same area. Ohio State and Pittsburg have roughly the same travel statistics for recruits while West Virginia and Michigan are outliers.

School---------------Avg. Distance-----% within 200-----% in-state-----Wins 2004-08
Ohio State ----------314.3443158-------66.3----------------55.8---------------51
Pittsburgh-----------314.5690351-------57.9----------------54.4---------------33
West Virginia------506.7447619-------40.5-----------------7.9----------------50
Michigan-----------547.2899074--------38------------------23.1---------------39

Perhaps this is why West Virginia lost the Backyard Brawl more often then they should have given the records. Ohio State is 7-1 in recent years of Michigan and excluding John Cooper and wins with leather helmets the could be a historic trend as well.

My take - I am glad RR is not recuiting locally. There is less competition for Ohio State's prime targets but it allows Michigan to field a decent team that gets beat by Ohio State on a regular basis. Double score.

I think you meant to type Jacksonville Jaguars instead of the Reds. Seriously, how can you group the Reds in with the Lions and Clippers? Lions have never been to a super bowl, neither have the Jags, the Clippers always blow, but if I'm not mistaken, the Reds have won their fair share of world series. I think 5 but I could be wrong. Bengals, sure they suck and you can group them in, but at least they've been to 1 super bowl.

He goes to Inkster HS, and Michigan did just land a 4 star WR by the name of Cam Gordon from that very school this year.

Dude..I am all for RR ignoring Michigan...I just don't see the logic in doing so.

Local kids should grow up immersed in the tradition of the program and dream of wearing that gawd awful helmet. They should be saying YES before the staff even finishes the offer.

In Ohio many of these kids truly bleed S&G..and there is no quesiton where they will go if they get the chance. That desire is in part fostered by the OSU staff staying close to the Ohio HS coaches..being part of clinics...having them in to campus...attending special functions or games, and so on.

The result is the locals aren't just playing to show case their skills and be a part of the program..but they are there for the honor of it. If that concept doesn't register..and if it isn't clear why that can be significant..then I guess there is no need to continue this exchange.

If OSU is loaded at a position we still have a good shot at getting a highly rated talent from Ohio to come to OSU..far better chance than getting a kid from Cali or Florida to add their name to our depth chart.

I just don't see why UM wouldn't work the local schools harder..what is the down side of that? He can still visit kids OOS...and given how often UM losses out on a kid to the local school you would think they would like to be on the other side of that fence as often as possible.

I'll say this: I certainly expect RR to try and get the local pipe lines flowing...you just can't expect to live OOS year in and year out. If FSU, Miami and Florida can all take a big class the same year...there won't be much BCS program caliber talent left in the pool. What is UM going to do then? MSU will have cleaned up Michigan if RR doesn't start paying some attention to the home state, OSU is doing well in Ohio and plenty of other big names dip into Ohio..Texas, TTU, and TAMU will have their share of Texas on lockdown and USC - UCLA will continue to skim California. The SEC will continue to be a force in all of those markets..and right now I suspect teams like LSU, USC, OSU, Texas, Oklahoma and Georgia have more cache than UM in most states not named Michigan.

The result is UM is praying for the top of the class in those markets, but often having to settle for the second tier of talent. The name isn't enough to bring them in from anywhere anymore..there are far more credible programs now than back in the day.

IMO UM needs to take care of business both in and out of state and I don't understand why it doesn't make sense to do so. What does UM lose by paying some attention to Michigan?

Can someone confirm or deny if Beanie was a Michigan fan before he was an OSU commit? I could've sworn he was..

I think there have been multiple players like that. Securing borders = important. If only for the players like Beanie. Or, in Michigan's case, Gholston comes to mind.
