This should be a good hire for the 'Cocks. VanGorder's name has been tossed around for some head coaching jobs lately.

Spurrier hired Atlanta Falcons linebacker coach Brian VanGorder as defensive coordinator Wednesday, one day after adding Maryland special teams wiz Ray Rychleski for South Carolina's special teams.

VanGorder takes over for Tyrone Nix, who left for Ole Miss earlier this month. Rychleski replaces Fred Chatham, who was not retained by Spurrier.
The changes come after a season that started promising and turned sour. South Carolina started 6-1 and ended the season on a five-game losing streak littered with breakdowns on defense and special teams.

Spurrier met with VanGorder on Tuesday and the two agreed on a three-year contract. Spurrier did not want to provide VanGorder's salary, although he's said during the search whomever he hired would earn more than Nix's package of $195,000.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Steve Spurrier has another reason to stick around South Carolina.

The university's Board of Trustees approved a tax-deferred retirement package Friday for Spurrier's contract that would pay the football coach $1 million if he remained with the Gamecocks the next four seasons.

The money would accrue in installments of $250,000 the next four years and would be given to Spurrier if he's still at South Carolina by Dec. 31, 2011. Spurrier would forfeit the package if he left the school before then.

Spurrier makes about $1.75 million a year. He was given a one-year contract extension and a raise of about $500,000 after the 2006 season when the Gamecocks finished with three straight victories, including wins over rival Clemson and Houston in the Liberty Bowl.

Once again, Stephen Garcia, the #1 recruited quarterback in the SEC (and other elite universities) has gotten into trouble with police.

He and two other players were found with coolers of alcohol outside their dorm room at 6:30 pm and cited for underage drinking.....

The Gamecocks coach says the Monday night session got out of hand. He did not have a reason for it. But Spurrier says if the players don't want to practice the way a team should, the team will spend its workouts running.

South Carolina is losing two offensive coaches, although only one is leaving by his own choice.
Steve Spurrier has fired much-maligned offensive line coach John Hunt, the university confirmed Sunday evening. Also, recruiting coordinator/assistant quarterbacks coach David Reaves told The State he is on his way to Tennessee.
Hunt has been under heavy criticism again this year as the Gamecocks struggled to protect their quarterbacks and run the ball. The 46-year-old Hunt coached with Steve Spurrier at Florida and with the Washington Redskins before joining Spurrier?s inaugural USC staff four years ago.
"We appreciate the job John Hunt has done here at Carolina for the past four seasons," Spurrier said in a release. "But we felt like we needed to make a change in that area. He's a good person and we wish him the best."
"I don't agree with the decision, but I respect Coach Spurrier's decision," Hunt said. "I appreciate the opportunity he gave me. I enjoyed my time in South Carolina and wish the Gamecocks the best in the future."
Reaves is joining his brother-in-law, Lane Kiffin, Tennessee?s new head coach, as the Volunteers? quarterbacks coach. Reaves interviewed with Kiffin two years ago with the Oakland Raiders, but decided to stay at USC.
Reaves, 29, a Columbia native who played quarterback at Spring Valley, spent seven years at USC under Lou Holtz and Spurrier.
Reaves said the opportunity in Knoxville was too good to pass up.

Tucker, GA Coach Bans USC From His Players

 The reaction USC's withdrawal of a scholarship offer to committed DB Jonathan Davis of Tucker, GA by his head coach is severe....he is banning Steve Spurrier from recruiting his players in the future. Michael Carvell of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution wrote the following story on the paper's recruiting blog.
Steve Spurrier and the South Carolina Gamecocks are ?no longer welcome? at Tucker High, one of the state?s top producers of college football prospects.

Tucker coach Franklin Stephens told the AJC of his proclamation after speaking with Spurrier on Sunday night. It had to do with Tucker linebacker Jonathan Davis, who had committed to South Carolina but was told on Friday that the Gamecocks had withdrawn the scholarship offer.

?The bottom line ? what South Carolina did to Jonathan was wrong,? Stephens told the AJC. ?Coach Spurrier accepted blame for the situation ? [but he] is not going to do anything to fix the situation, therefore South Carolina will not be recruiting any more Tucker players.?

On Friday, Stephens had a ?heated? conversation with Gamecocks assistant Shane Beamer, who ultimately said ?South Carolina had to do what was in South Carolina?s best interests when it came to recruiting,? according Stephens. How did the Tucker coach respond? ?I am ? not even going to say. It was a heck of a phone call. I?ll just leave it at that.? Stephens held off on commenting until he heard Spurrier?s side of the story on Sunday night.

Sharpe, who left the school as their all-time leader in receptions, yardage and touchdowns, also told the hosts that his ?guts would definitely be ripped out? if the university were to put his jersey number back into circulation.

Shortly after the Thursday radio interview, Sharpe had somewhat softened his stance, but was still dismayed over this even becoming an issue.

?I?m not beating this horse to death. I?ve said my piece, and I?m done. It?s a situation that I got drug into, this kid got drug into, and I don?t think it?s fair to either one of us,? Sharpe told The State newspaper.

?There?s nothing else I can do. There?s nothing else I can say. ? In the nicest way that I possibly can, I?m done with it. It?s up to the powers-that-be to do whatever it is they want to.?

While it?s definitely no Kiffin Vs. Meyer, this one could get fairly interesting as the older Sharpe is not known as one to bite his tongue.
