Hypothetical: Who should get the Big East's automatic BCS bid?
The Big East didn't deserve an automatic Bid this year, Walt Harris leaves Pitt, but they gain Louisville next year. Does anyone really believe that the Big East will deserve an automatic bid again next year?!? West Virginia is an annual disappointment, Pittsburgh is in decline, and Louisville is hardly a national power - the rest of the BE couldn't take down Indiana without a head coach.
If YOU were to make the choice, how would you handle this situation? There is another BCS bid available for you to decide how it's handled.

id take it away from the big east and use it as an at large bid. that way the big east can still earn it if they have a worthy team....but if they have a team that sucks like this year it would go to cal.

I like it the way it is. If a team's champion doesn't average in the top 12 over a 4 year span, they lose it and it becomes another at-large bid.
Over the last 4 years, the Big Least has averaged...
2001 - Miami - 1st
2002 - Miami - 1st
2003 - Miami - 9th
2004 - Pitt - 21st
Four-year average is 8th place, only because of Miami. Next year they will lose a 1st place and if the champion finishes any lower than 17th, they'll lose the bid for the 2006 BCS.

The bid should go to the top team not in the 5 major conferences, while removing the top-6 automatic bid for their teams. This stops all of the "mid-majors" from complaining, and relegates the Big East to a mid-major conference, which is all it deserves.
That would have gone to Utah this year. Then Cal would have gotten the Rose Bowl bid, while Texas would play Utah in the Fiesta. Pitt would not have gotten the BCS bid.
I stated this at the beginning of the year, so it's not hindsight.

I say get rid of Automatic bids... just give them to the top 8 BCS ranked (soon to be 10- assuming nothing happend with the 5th bowl plan and I missed it) teams and just play--- I'm tired of hearing how Cal got screwed because they are better than Texas.. they got screwed because hey are better than Pitt.

I would like to see the Big East automatic bid become a bid that would go to the champion of either CUSA, MWC, WAC or Big East and had the best record.
So, this year, it woulda gone to Utah and Cal would be in the Rose Bowl with the at-large Utah got. And Pitt would be out, which is what should happen.
I agree about the Top 8 in the BCS just getting the bids. To go one step further, I wrote a column on www.o-state.com about the Top 8 of the BCS leading into a three-week playoff: http://www.o-state.com/football/2004...t-still-broken
