I noticed there were 14 seconds left when the penalty occurred, and then I was surprised when the clock was at zero when the guy scored.

But Iowa completed a pass to their own 49 with 20 seconds remaining, short of a first down. They should have called 1 of their 2 TO's. They didn't, and the clock went down to 14 before the illegal procedure/false start stopped the clock.

But an offensive penalty should only stop the clock temporarily in that situation. Once they marked it off and spotted the ball ready for play, I'm pretty sure the refs were correct in starting the clock.

Imagine if he had been tackled inside the 10, and the clock went to zero when Iowa still had 2 TO's. That might have cost Ferentz some weight in the 'Coach of the Year' voting, don't you think?

Kirk Ferentz and Jim Tressel are the true class acts of the big10. Thats just my opinion and JT is my favorite of course, but KF is definatelly a class act the NFL SHOULD be trying for him. Drew Tate may be the best QB in the big10.

Iowa got really lucky. When Iowa completed the pass with 20 seconds left and 2 time outs, I'm pretty sure Texas assumed Iowa would be trying to setup a FG and were trying to stop them from getting in FG positon. That FG position D killed them. As others have mentioned, Iowa had poor clock management, but they were able to throw the bomb against a D not designed against a last second pass.

It really says a lot about the quality of depth in the Texas program that they can almost beat Iowa and then come back later in the day and beat scUM.

Iowa should have won the game regardless of the last pass. They pretty much dominated most of the game until the last 6 minutes. Their quarterback is the real deal, the kid is very good.
