Buckeyenation27, you missed my point totally, which is pretty common for you. My point is around here pay more attention to regional schools and the same is true for the region in which you live. While Ohio State has been blasted by ESPN and other media outlets, Bama was slammed by ESPN and Sports Illustrated,etc. The difference for you, it that you probably did not notice the Bama allegations to the same extent that you notice the allegations revolving around the Buckeye program.

right because both stories were covered the same exact way. they both got the same press time and everything

That is complete and total bull [censored]. When was the last time that Ala was the lead of a Sportcenter??? I am sure it is a big deal in the South but it is a regionalized story NOT a National one. If you and your friends missed all the gory details of the OSU allegations night after night after night is because you are living under a rock with no cable TV.

I'd say they were covered differently because Bama was a cut and dry case of being busted. tOSU has been more of a hot-on-trail tabloid story with constant turns. A report of an event vs. an investigation. I do agree that we do pay more attention to regional news.

Folanator, thank you for making my point. The Mike Price/ Alabama situation was all over ESPN and Sports Illustrated. It was even covered by CNN, MSNBC, CBS, NBC, and ABC national news. The fact that you don't recall this is probably due to the fact you don't keep up with Bama football.

With that said, I am not minimizing the poor treatment of Ohio State by ESPN.

Buckeye27, I was comparing the current situation with Ohio State and the media with the previous handling of the Bama situation. Their handling was not exactly the same, both both, being major football powers, were attacked aggresively by the media. Geesh!!!

I don't recall Alabama being attacked by the media regarding the Mike Price situation. Why would Alabama come under attack in the 1st place? It was all about Price, and he was summarily fired. The Mike Price situation is not at all comparable to the OSU lynching.

ok. meanwhile the rest of us were talking about means and the recruiting scandal that is similar to OSU in what the offense was (money to player) but the reporting was different.

Buckeye27, the Means allegations were investigated throughout 2001 and into 2002 by the NCAA Bama was hammered in the press. It dragged on in the media, both local, regional, and national mediafor months, though the intensity of the coverage varied. The school was placed on probation in 2002.


What is going on now, does not involve the school or the NCAA. They are going after an individual for allegedly paying a high school coach, among other things. You certainly may have the last word now.

That is part of Donny's point though...

Our perception as tOSU fans is that the situation did not receive the same amount of coverage. Yet a Bama fan, who paid much more attention to it, just as we do with this current problem, sees a similarity in the coverage.

Its all about proximity and perception.

The folks that aren't aware of Alabama's problems over the past few years haven't been paying attention. I'm not looking this stuff up, but recalling all of these incidents from memory.

The coach about 4 or 5 years ago (Mike DuBose, I believe) was involved in an affair with his secretary. They also had an NCAA investigation for recruiting issues. Those things combined with a poor record led to him getting dumped.

The Albert Means recruiting scandal was a big story. There were numerous articles on many national college football websites for over a year about that. Fulmer was accused of turning them in. This was after Tennessee had been investigated for academic fraud (papers written by tutors, etc.) but the NCAA didn't find anything to nail Tennessee on that. Alabama folks accused Fulmer of making a deal with the NCAA to get a clean slate if he helped them nail Bama. The NCAA obviously denied that such a deal existed. There were lawsuits filed by folks in both Alabama and Tennessee. Fat Phil skipped media day last August in order to avoid a subpoena.

Mike Price was hired to replace DuBose. If you don't remember stories about the strip club and 2 strippers with him in the hotel (Stripper - "Roll Tide"; Price - "It's rollin' baby!") it's not because of lack of coverage. That was a big topic for ESPN and there were full stories in Sports Illustrated.

While Donny may deserve some red chiclets on occasion, I think his posts on this thread have been accurate. Alabama was hit hard in the media for 3 different things. It was a bigger story in the South, naturally, but there was national coverage for all of them.

I think part of the perception is because fans concentrate on items related to their own team. And obviously ESPN also seems to have an inexplicable desire to repeatedly drag tOSU through the mud.

But we're not alone. The Colorado sex/recruiting story lasted for months last year. The ESPN coverage of the Colorado situation was comparable to their sensationalized coverage of the whole Clarett saga. The President of the University, Betsy Hoffman, was interviewed on the Today Show. Barnett was suspended for 3 months and then reinstated. Their worthless AD (Dick Tharp) quietly resigned a few weeks ago.

The media loved both the Mike Price situation at Alabama; and the Katie Hnida, Lisa Simpson (yes, actual name) and 5 others accusing football players of rape, combined with the strippers-for-recruits investigation at Colorado for an obvious reason: those stories all involved sex. Notre Dame was even dragged through the mud a few years ago when an overzealous female booster was screwing football players (As an Irish fan, perhaps her name was Susan O'Z, but I'm just guessing there).

But ESPN's continual bashing of tOSU doesn't make sense, since there isn't any sexual element to any of the football related stories.
