The bitching isn't about cash, it's about status. People who are willing and able to spend that kind of money on something like this aren't gonna be hurting for that $200. They're upset because now that more people will be able to afford its still somewhat hefty price tag. I think it's funny that these people's sense of self-worth is so heavily tied to owning something few others do.

FYI, there will be a better iphone coming out in the near future. I'm guessing this price cut has to do with that.

I'm [censored]ed off because I over paid to be one of the first to have the new gadget not thinking that like most technology, prices drop ridiculously fast.... Cry me a river and then use your iPhone to give me turn-by-turn directions to the boat ramp....

SAN JOSE, California (AP) -- A New York woman is so angry at Apple Inc. for lopping $200 off the price of the iPhone that she's filed a lawsuit seeking $1 million in damages.

Dongmei Li of Queens, New York, claimed the company violated price discrimination laws when it slashed the price of the 8-gigabyte iPhone by a third, from $599 to $399, within two months of the gadget's June debut.

Apple issued an apology the next day. Under its return policy, Apple refunded the $200 difference for those who bought the phone within 14 days of the reduction. And in a move to make peace with those who purchased the higher-priced phone before that period, the company offered a $100 credit at Apple stores.
According to Li's lawsuit, filed on September 24 in the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of New York, the price reduction injured early purchasers like herself because they cannot resell the product for the same price as those who bought the cell phone following the price cut.
Li purchased a 4GB iPhone for $499 and alleged that owners of the 4GB model were given less favorable terms than those who bought the 8GB model at the premium price, according to the lawsuit.
Apple spokeswoman Susan Lundgren declined to comment, citing the company's policy to not discuss pending litigation.
The lawsuit also named AT&T Inc., the exclusive carrier in the U.S. for the iPhone, and alleged the two companies' required two-year service contract for the iPhone constituted unfair business practices.

This iPhone, with enterprise support out of the box, GPS, and 3rd party apps, looks like it's got some serious teeth to it. $199 is not a bad price at all, although I hear the data plan is $30 extra a month (as opposed to $20 extra for the old EDGE iPhone).

They went right at Windows Mobile by circumventing running applications in the background by making a push protocol for all 3rd party apps (not just core services like email and calendar items). So you don't have to run applications in the background all the time, constantly pulling data through your wireless connection and draining your battery. Instead, a tiny packet of data is sent to your iPhone, which launches the appropriate app, and you go from there.

My Blackberry never really got bogged down with applications running in the background, though. Then again, my Blackberry looks like a clunky, ugly POS next to an iPhone.

There's a huge security problem in the latest iPhone 2.0.2: if you have your JesusPhone password protected, using a very simple trick gives anyone full access to your cellphone private information in Mail, SMS, Contacts, and even Safari. The two-step trick is even simpler to the one used in the past to gain access to the phone to install unlocking cards or jailbreak.
