I did a lot of online research (Consumer Reports, CNET, AVS Forum, etc) and decided the Panasonic Viera S1 or Viera G10 plasmas were the way to go. However, when I went to stores and looked at them in person, I thought the Samsung LCD's had a clearly better picture. I ended up going with a Samsung LCD 630 model from Amazon.

They always set them on Vivid, which pops in the store but is a horrible overall setting. Add in weak source signals and too much lighting (one reasons LCD's look better in the store....they are better in heavily lit areas but worse in dimly lit areas), and most places are rather poor for doing comparisons. At least BB added Magnolia stores which have low lighting, better signals/direct sources, and often calibrated. Of course that is only for the high end models.

My Optoma HD20 showed up.. unreal. 115" of 1080p for $999 - looks great. The only negative I had found while researching was the blacks weren't "ink" black - can't tell at all. With 4,000 hour bulb life - I'm beyond happy with the buy.
Highly recommend it to anyone considering dropping the money. |
