I have rebooted since I started having the problem but never did a complete shutdown. I think I will start doing that when I am finished for the day. I always did that, do the a complete shutdown, when I was working and never had any problems. Don't know why I discontinued doing that. Maybe lazy. Anyhow, I will let you know what happens after a night or two of shutdowns. Thanks for all of your help and suggestions. Much appreciated.

Always believed that is better for them. Shutting them on and off too much is bad for the power supply, but leaving them on too much can cause problems with heat as well.

Meant to get back to you regarding my problem. I did a complete shutdown a couple nights ago and during the shutdown noticed a message about closing system.exe. Also, the Windows shutdown seemed to take a long period of time but after bringing it up the next morning that evening the HD turned off at the time I had set. Looks like I will be doing complete shutdowns a little more often.

If you have multiple anti-virus software programs running, your system could in effect, be confused. Delete/uninstall any non-primary anti-virus software.

i think it is the anti-virus, but why would it all of a sudden cause the computer to jam up? its never done that before.

Macafee??
Norton??
You deserve a flogging....
Make sure you don't have an automatic daily scan setup.
It runs in the background taking up huge resources... and does so every 24 hours. Usually depending in your hard drive size, how much data you have and your equipment - each scan can easily take a few hours.
