Also,consider creating an additional partition on your drive. Use it for 7 to see if you like it,and if not..disregard and act like it never happened.

Apps are questionable, it will depend on how much of the actual OS and core dll's they changed in the system, some change, some don't, in past experiences the upgrade usually fails on some hardware driver that windows has native or some weird application that works with a piece of hardware.

Data, since Windows 7 is in the upgrade path to follow Vista, there shouldn't be any loss to personal documents, pics, etc...

Usually the OS is just upgraded, then it runs like [censored] because you upgraded, so you go to a friends house, copy all your porn off onto an external drive he has, install the new os, lose the apps, copy your porn back over, leave, forgetting to delete your porn so a few hours later your budy texts you with "Dude, you are into some sick [censored]ing [censored], I don't think we can be friends anymore you sick [censored]."

That's just been my personal experience.

Both.

If your CPU supports 64bit extentions then you need a 64bit OS to take advantage of that capability.

Run CPU-Z it will tell you everything you need to know about your proc.

Look under the "Instructions" line for the extentions your CPU supports. Look for x86-64 (AMD) or EM64T (Intel).

The reason I question the 32 bit vs 64 bot
I think I remember having the option on an earlier machine
to make it a 64 bit just by populating an entry field
so I got the impression the user could dictate it
