FAQ - 2. Forums Overview
2. Forums Overview
What is a forum? Generally speaking, a forum is a meeting place. An area where people come together to exchanges ideas, meet friends and often times learn something new. The concept of a forum is taken from the ancient Romans. The Forum was the main marketplace and business center, where the ancient Romans went to do their banking, trading, shopping, and marketing. It was also a place for public speaking. The ancient Romans were great orators. They loved to talk. The job of their orators was not to argue, but to argue persuasively! People thronging the Forum would stop and listen, then wander away to do their shopping, and perhaps leave a gift at a temple for one of their gods. At BuckeyePlanet a forum is much the same as in ancient Rome, a meeting place, somewhere the share thoughts, argue points, and discuss a wide variety of topics. While BuckeyePlanet’s main thrust is the discussion of Ohio State athletics, there are a wide range of forums to meet our members needs. We love to discuss the Buckeyes, but we also like to talk about politics, religion, computers, and almost anything else. We are a diverse group. The only constrain we place on our members is that they know the proper forum for their topic. Folks on the Buckeye Football board don’t want to hear an analysis of the latest election. Nor do the folks discussing the latest football recruiting class care to hear about the newest X-box game. Be considerate of the membership in general and post your thoughts in the appropriate forum. We all make mistakes from time to time, but make every effort to learn from them. Once a post is made (in the wrong forum), it will take a moderator or administrator to move it to the proper forum. These folks are here to enjoy themselves as well. Something they can not do when spending their time trying to organize the forums. So go and enjoy yourself. Meet new people, discuss things that you are interested in, learn something new. There’s a wide range of topics to discuss and they change, evolve and grow almost daily. If you don’t see a forum that seems appropriate for your interests, suggest it. That’s how our forums came to be. There are 3 different types of forums at BuckeyePlanet. The first is called a Category. It isn’t really a forum in the sense that you can’t add posts or threads. It is simply a way of grouping similar forums together. Think of these as a heading that groups related forums together. Next is a standard forum. A place to start threads and respond to threads with posts. Finally we have a Sub-forum or ‘Child’ forum. These are exactly identical to standard forums, but they are grouped inside another forum. Think of these as nestled folders. A Category will have different forums contained inside. Each of these Forums can have Sub-Forums (or ‘Child’ Forums) continued within as well. Even the Sub-Forums can have Sub-Forums. Below is an outline of the current forums and their general descriptions. Each forum has a unique style and atmosphere. As such, many of the forums have their own set of guidelines and customs.
