Admirable ... maybe; wise ... not really - kinda like marrying the girl you dated in 8th grade just because she was your first kiss.
The bottom line is this - the kids have to take the best offer, regardless of when/why/how received. In the long run, it will do no recruit any good stubbornly to honor an ill-timed verbal commitment. The reason that there is one Signing Day is so that the recruits have one REAL decision to make - which LOI to sign and submit. Verbal commitments aren't binding, legally or (IMHO) morally.
Choosing a college is a very important decision, and recruits should really look only at the facts and not be swayed by fleeting emotions or some misguided sense of honor. (Of course, my comments apply to all recruits - even Ohio State's verbals - and not just to Joe Thomas).
