Should recruits commit early?
would you commit early??
I was thinking earlier today - I would definitely commit early and get it over with - a lot of these recruiting issues seem like fiascoes at times - I just want it over with but I don't thrive on attention either. What about everyone else?

my opinion
THis is my opinion, I would prolly wait til everyone that I want to see me does and i gets a good evaluation of me. Once I had ALL the offers that I wanted I would visit every school and then figure out which one fit me the best and positioned my self to succeed not only in Athletics but Academics. I think alot of people dont realize it's just like when we were picking colleges what the enviroment was like, the type of majors offered matter alot, the only difference is that these kids have to evaluate which coaches, team and facilities they like on top of the academics. I would choose whatever school I felt the most comfortable with.

If Jim Tressel or one of his staff contacted me, I would commit on the spot. . . . even before I had an offer. But that's just me -- an old fart wistfully thinking about what might have been.

I think the fiasco is only as big as you let it get. Some of these boys love the attention. I mean lets face it... a lot of these guys will go somewhere and you will more than likely never hear of them again. So they want the spot light. If they can have it for a year, all the better. There is a big trend in sports now of once you get noticed, make all you can of it. (Freddy Mitchell)
To answer your question, (I guess we are assuming you could play anywhere you wanted) I think I would take all my visits, just for the travel. Then commit, and most importantly stick to that commitment.

I would not commit early, as I would like to take all my allotted official visits to see places I had never been or would like to go. For example - Hawaii, Miami, UCLA, San Diego State, maybe a Texas or Georgia or Alabama. Lots of women to see at all!
Then I would committ to tOSU. But I would first tell Coach Tressell that I am committed to him but want to take my visits to "have fun".
One thing I would like to see is this - the NCAA would allow any recruits to automatically dissolve their LOI if the coach were to leave or get fired before enrolling. I think this is fair to all parties.

I am moving this to the regular football board. Even though it is a recruiting topic let's try to keep the recruiting board focused on specific players and at least away from purely speculative threads.
But, to answer the question - as much as I bleed Scarlet (I really do - I checked) as a coach or parent I would advise my kids to take their visits. If OSU is the place - no harm done. If you change your mind it is a good thing you took the visits. This is about your future - not an emotional relationship to a mascot.

I would commit early mainly because I wouldn't be able to deal with the invasion of privacy that goes on by these recruiting websites like rivals and the insiders.
The early commitment would be to Michigan, and the letter of intent would be faxed in to Ohio State, with a simple statement like I'd rather play for a winner and not for a whiney-face.

I committed early, and it was a big mistake. I spent my entire senior season being "coached" by my future college coach. That's all I needed! I could have spent my entire senior season being treated like a king by all my pursuers, instead I got treated like the red headed step child.

I would have to believe that all the invasion of privacy and constant phone calls will happen regardless of when you commit. If they can't make you want to come to their school they sure as heck will try to make you change your mind about where you do want to go. I mean just because Chris Wells committed to tOSU the other day doesn't mean scUM, OU and all the other interested places will stop calling.

It goes without saying that there will be some level of privacy invaded. However, I think it's obvious that Todd Denlinger and Jim Cordle led more peaceful lives than did Lawrence Wilson and Jason Gwaltney over the past several months.
