Recruiting Rankings
After clicking around randomly on scout's commit lists, thought it would be interesting to see who had the best class as of today, August 1st. Rankings are hit and miss in the end (and this is a VERY quick and dirty list, by all means), and rivals and scout will both "update" their rankings again sometime soon, so these numbers should change even with the same commits they all currently have. I know its still really early in the game, but thought this would be entertaining (for me, at least), since the networks haven't started comparing school's classes yet.
According to Scout: Verbal Commits 1) Texas - three 5*'s, eleven 4*'s (#10 dt lamarr houston jr), eight 3*'s, two 1*'s (1 is a kicker) - 24 total, 6 top 100 2) Georgia - four 5*'s, two 4*, seven 3*'s, two 2*'s, one 1* (nr lb darius dewberry) - 16 total, 4 top 100 3) LSU - seven 4*'s, five 3*'s, one JUCO - 13 total, 3 top 100 4) Ohio State - two 5*'s, four 4*'s, one 3* - 7 total, 6 top 100 (NOT A TYPO) 5) Oklahoma - five 4*'s, three 3*'s (nr lb brandon caleb), three JUCO's (including former 5* LB Chris Patterson) - 11 total, 1 top 100 6) Notre Dame - one 5*, four 4*'s, six 3*'s (nr qb demetrius jones, nr cb raeshon mcneil) - 12 total, 1 top 100 7) Pittsburgh - two 5*'s (#1 te nate byham), one 4*, eight 3*'s (nr wr aaron smith, nr rb kevin collier, nr cb ricky gary), five 2*, one 1*'s - 17 total, 2 top 100 8) UCLA - three 4*'s, ten 3*'s, one 1* (nr de christian yount) - 14 total (not including chane moline, who's unlisted as commit) 9) Michigan - two 5*'s, two 4*, two 3*'s, one 1* (nr dt marques slocum) - 7 total, 4 top 100 10) Texas A&M - five 4*'s, four 3*'s, two 1*'s - 11 total, 1 top 100 Honorable Mention Florida - one 5*, five 4*'s, three 3*'s - 9 total, 1 top 100 Clemson - one 5*, four 4*'s (#13 s deandre mcdaniel), four 3*'s, one 2*, one 1*'s (1 is a kicker) - 11 total, 1 top 100 Florida State - three 4*'s, four 3*'s, three JC's (former 5* dt callahan bright, de justin mincey, ol matt hardrick) - 10 total Auburn - one 5*, three 4*'s, one 3*, two 1*'s (nr cb zaccheus etheridge), one JUCO - 8 total, 1 top 100 Illinois - two 4*'s, eight 3*'s (nr wr keven hagans), one 2*, one 1*(nr lb rahkeem smith) - 12 total, 1 top 100 California - three 4*'s, six 3*'s (nr de kevin browner, nr cb brandon jones) - 9 total Oklahoma State - one 5*, one 4*, six 3*'s, five 1*'s - 13 total, 1 top 100 Alabama - two 4*'s, three 3*'s, one 2*, one 1*, three JC's (including former 4* rb mike ford) - 10 total Miami (fl) - four 4*'s, one 3*'s, one 1* (nr de richard gordon) - 6 total, 1 top 100 Ole Miss - one 4*, six 3*'s, one 2*, three 1*'s, two JC's - 13 total Texas Tech - two 4*'s, six 3*'s, one 2*, five 1*'s - 14 total Duke - two 4*'s, four 3*'s, four 2*'s, one 1* - 11 total Virginia - nine 3*'s, four 2*'s, two 1*'s - 14 total Washington - three 4*'s, one 3* - 4 total, 2 top 100 Tennessee - two 4*'s, two 3*'s, one 1* (nr ol darrius myers) - 5 total, 1 top 100 Nebraska - three 4*'s, two 3*'s - 5 total USC - one 5*, one 4*, one 3*, one JC - 4 total, 1 top 100 Interesting To Note EDIT 8/31: Scout has tweaked its rankings, where some 1*-3*'s have been moved to higher star rankings. Teams that were helped by the rankings changes were Georgia, LSU, Florida, Pittsburgh, Clemson, Illinois, Miami, and Florida State. Only team hurt by the changes was Notre Dame. Pittsburgh has received 4 verbals in 3 weeks. LSU moved from #5 to #3, Pittsburgh went from middle of the pack honorable mention to #7, and Flordia State moved dramatically with its 3 JUCO's. Alabama, Duke, Ole Miss, Texas Tech, USC, and Virginia were added to the list. Arkansas, Purdue, and Virginia Tech are close to making the list. Last edited by BuckTwenty; 08-31-2005 at 03:37 AM. I'd be curious to see where we stand once we fill out the rest of the class. Texas has so many more recruits than everyone else, of course they are currently #1. As past history has demonstrated, #1 classes do not equal national championships.

Something you should edit into your post is the top-100 players landed. That helps highlight the top players you landed, and separates the average 4-stars from the stud 4-stars. All of this is just hype, as we all know the blue chip flops and the diamonds in teh rough (hawk, holmes, etc)... but for the sake of this argument its worth it.

Wow... that's quite impressive. Here's the remaining guys
Will land: Gibson, Small Should land: Brown, Cumberland (grades) Could land: Micah Johnson, Reuland, Ball, Ausberry, Longshot to land: Hornsby, Tilley, Bowman, Hunter. I think Rob Rose, a very raw player, will have a shot at breaking into the top-100 after his senior season. I see us getting: Gibson, Small, Brown, Reuland and one more surprise. That would give us ten top-100 players. |

Texas won't have the top class when it is all said and done. Their class is loaded now, but it is almost complete. Remember Virginia last year? They had a very good class by their standards, but it wasn't the #1 class many projected this time last year.
It all depends on what recruiting service you look at. Rivals and Scout differ more this year than any year I remember in the past. Scout has about 13 or 14 Ohio players in the Top 100 while Rivals has I think 4. The Sporting News has 5 I believe. Scout only has 6 Florida players in the Hot 100 while Rivals as the Sunshine State at either 12 or 13. Sporting news has them with 9. So just going by that, Scout will have Ohio State with a higher rated class (as of now) than Rivals or SN will. Lists will change and players will certainly move. I respect Ohio, but I don't think they will end up with 14 players in the Top 100 when the final rankings are listed. I think overall the top 5 classes will come from these teams: USC, Michigan, OSU, Florida, Miami, Florida State, Texas and Oklahoma. I may be biased, but I think Florida and USC will fight it out for the top spot. California is LOADED with great prospects this year, so USC will have a great class. Florida is in on some very high ranking kids and has about 30 offers to hand out. |

IF Texas can land a top QB then we will have a very good chance at having the #1 class, if not then we will be top ten for sure. Right now from what I understand we are in on Mustain, the kid from Ark. but that we may not be in the lead as once was believed. Many saying that we aren't even a factor any more. Rocky Hinds has also visited austin, but his family is in nevada and i think that unlv is considered a favorite to land the usc transfer.

Edited the rankings. Due to adding top 100 players, OSU jumped ahead of Oklahoma, Michigan made the top 10, LSU jumped a few spots from #9, and I added Miami, Okie St, and Cal (who all had top 100 players, and whom I forgot to add when making the original list). Georgia and OSU are roughly about even, all things considered, but since Georgia has 4 in the top 50 (four 5*'s), I gave them the edge.
G8er- very true about Texas, they won't have the best class when its all said and done. Though, with three 5*'s, six top 100 players, and 13 players with 4*'s or better, they set the bar pretty high early. Though Virginia was the number one class for quite a while, the bar they set was very low in comparison (one 5*, a few 4*'s, LOTS of 3*'s). Rivals hasn't set the rest of their rankings past 4* players yet (no 1*-3* players), so I chose not to include them just yet. Plus, I generally consider Scout to be more up-to-date in their updates on players in comparison to Rivals (and Scout is better about not being biased towards the southern players, especially this year!). ![]() |

I don't think Rivals is biased at all towards Southern players. I don't think Scout is biased at all towards Ohio players. I do think you can agree with me that Ohio will not have 14 players in the Hot 100 when all is said and done. Infact, I think Ohio has more players in the Scout 100 than Florida, Louisiana, Georgia and Mississippi combined.
I think Rivals and Scout are both real good. I am surprised that their is so much difference in their ratings this year. Once the season starts, I think we will see the lists match each other. |

Ausberry is a definite longshot, but I think he's a different breed of longshot than the others. Micah might belong in the longshot category.
Rose is definitely going to OSU. I would be shocked if he heads elsewhere. He was not on my list b/c he is not yet top-100. |

Whither USC - and Why?
Perhaps methomps has some insight on this, however, I found the lack of USC in even an honorable mention category kindof interesting.
They do tend to close late, and they are definitely in (as usual) on a slew of 4* players, though not (unusual?) on many other 5* players (per Scout). That said - right now they have one 4* (OL) one 3* (DT) and one 1* (TE - ex JC). So is it just that USC doesn't many schollies to give this year? Or is this a typical USC MO, lots of offers to Blue Chip players, late closing? |
