Scholarship Breakdown by Position and Recruiting Class

Great work Oh8ch. I remember trying to keep one of these for myself back in the day and getting so frustrated not knowing who was on schollie, position changes etc. Lots of hard work and time go into this being so well kept.

Also a few thoughts from looking at it as it stands 12/10/06:

-If Pitt and Ginn are gone next years SR class will have only 8 players. If Gonzo goes as well we're probably going to have multiple JR captains. Anyone remember if/when thats ever happened before?

-DT is going to be an issue next year with only 3 on schollie plus any incoming frosh. No matter who signs or steps up, were young and thin at the interior DL next year.

-DE is an embarrassment of riches with more on the way.

-Ditto WR

-If Pittmans gone we have Wells x 2 and recruits. Not the kind of depth I'm comfortable with at TB in the B10.

-Lets hope Russell recovers quickly because there are some issues at DB despite a lot of bodies. Jenkins is obviously a stud, Washington and JamO neeed to continue their improvement. 1 safety spot and the 5th and 6th db's will be green as they can be if Russell is a no-go next year.

On the surface I'd say we'll be solid but not NC material in '07 and primed for another title run as early as '08 depending on who goes pro early after next year.

One little feature the Scout eligibility tracker puts up is the total roster count - sometimes this leads to inflated roster counts. It implies there are greater than 85 players on scholarship. For instance Ohio State is listed with 112 players in the Scout chart with 19 players having 2006 eligibility, while the Oh8ch chart shows 17 such players. 2007 Scout shows 15 players, Oh8ch (BP) shows 10.

Part of this is surely the walk-on, no scolarship count, part I feel is that Oh8ch simply has a more accurate chart of the scholarship players and their remaining eligibility.

Anyway, good work, and thanks Mili for opening it up so we can give Oh8ch some well deserved credit for an original idea - imitation is the most sincere form of flattery.

I greatly appreciate all that Oh8ch has done with to compile and manage this. People are gonna copy this kind of thing and I'm not sure if you can protect what Oh8ch has done, but I am very certain that it deserves rep and here's some green chiclets for you Oh8ch!

I see from the chart that the magic number is apparently ten. Given the percieved 'relaxed' (and yes, I know that perception and reality rarely agree) attitude toward this year's recruiting, does anyone think the staff might be looking to bank a schollie or two for next year??

If I'm reading this correctly, we stand to lose only 10 players at the end of the 2007 season (disregarding any early departures this year or next). Tress may have a few deserving senior walk-ons in mind for the big jump to schollie status, allowing us to pick up some more talent next year, perhaps??

I've never claimed to be much in the know on these things, so please do correct me if I'm off the mark...

with the lack of depth and experience at defensive tackle and with the considerable depth at linebacker and defensive end, it looks like we'll be running a 3-4 frequently next year. any ideas about who may be converted to the tackle position? it looks like it should be a matter of "will" instead of "may," though.

I would have to say Worthington and Barrow without a doubt go inside, but I don't think anybody else does.

I don't follow football recruiting as closely as I do basketball so some of the names of the 2008 OL recruits escape me but can some of them up playing on the defense inside. I know the names Adams, Brewster, Long but are unfamiliar with some of the in-state prospects.

Great job to all who have contributed to this 'living document'. It is my favorite, and I refer to it constantly, looking at the 'two-deeps' and the 'stars' of the OSU starters, and marveling on how many kids came of age, and outdid expectations. The star system has been discussed ad-nauseum on many of the threads, so I'll let it rest. Especially great is the list of 'did not finish' kids that departed for greener pastures. Like to see who of those kids were drafted, or gained notice elsewhere.

Don't know who said it first, but I agree that we bank some schollies, as OSU seems to have four deep at each CB, and almost the same at safety. Unless some DE's either eat or pump their way up, we need 3 DTs. the redshirt LB's coming on next year are better than most any team's current year recruits. Youth prevails all over the place.

With the big crop of OL's coming on, it doesn't seem like we'd be in any real trouble anywhere else either. ( I know someone will point out the lack of wisdom of that statement, but hey, recruiting is more of a mental masturbation game than anything).

As I recall, I certainly wasn't mature enough to be able to pick with certainty the school where I would earn my livlihood from at the next step (for them the NFL, for me, the workforce), so don't really blame these kids. Wish all the great ones (to be) would become Buckeyes, but through it all, am impressed how Tress & Co fill the 'holes' that are needed.

Are you going to update it to reflect Gonzo passing up his last year of eligibility? Or are you awaiting the announcements from Ginn, Jr. and Pittman, too?
