The part about the % of the season isn't current in that link. 30% of the season's contests (rounded up) has been the rule for all seasons involving current players on the roster. So up to 4 games may be played in a 12 or 13 game season, as long as they were all in the first 6 games of the season, in order to apply for a medical hardship waiver ("medical redshirt").

The red portion of your quote (where is this quote from...how about a source or a link?) only mention that Tressel says he thinks that Homan is done for the season...the is zero mention of redshirt.

The blue portion of your quote (again, where are you pulling this stuff from?) has Fickell saying he think Homan will redshirt this year (2007 is "this year" from the quote I guess). I'm guessing the "(since he played in four games or less and was then injured, he is eligible for a redshirt)" portion is you, and not a quote from Fickell...if so, then you haven't been listening when we told you that he's eligible to apply for a medical redshirt after using up all his normal eligibility.

Dude your guess would be wrong!!! None of that is from me, it's from Bucknut's, "Thursday Afternoon Update, date 8 Nov 07 By Dave Biddle". Look Homan was being talked about I answered a question please do not take it so personal it was not intended that way. I know the rule; the way it was explained to me was because Homan did not take a redshirt his freshman year they granted a redshirt to him in 07. You do a great job on this site and I know you know more than I about most these guys.

After doing some further research, there are two types of waivers involved. One is called an "extension waiver", and only comes into play when the 6th year of eligibility is requested.

So an athlete like Homan, who suffers a season-ending injury in the first half of the season and participated in no more than 30% of the team's games, and hadn't yet had a "non-playing" season; the medical hardship waiver may be granted in order to give him 5 seasons to play 4, with the injury season becoming the redshirt year since one wasn't taken previously.

It appears that only when the extension waiver is involved does the athlete has to wait in order to apply for the 6th season.

So I'd say that Homan has received the hardship waiver already, and should be moved to the junior column.
