Just to provide some perspect on this whole thing: not too long ago, most of us would have been content with a DL class of Martin, Barksdale, Jeremiah and one more DT. I think Martin and Barksdale end up here. Jeremiah will be here the moment he gets his scores. Thomas is icing on the cake, and I think we will have space for him. Stills/Brent/Heyward are the wildcards here. We will still end up with an excellent class, but it will not be as sexy as some have predicted about a month ago.

DL recruits
1. Martin is a DE...not a DT. OSU is dreadfully thin at DT next year. People will jump and mention specific guys sliding down to DT.....but those guys are far from certain to be studs. We need a stud or two on the DL or we'll be moving OL over next year.
2. OSU is one of the few schools not negatively recruiting yet seems to be taking the brunt of the negative recruiters. REally strange. It's astonishing that OSU has to go hat-in-hand to OOS recruits and apologize for beating the local state team in the NC game to get guys to consider OSU.
3. I think JT ought to experiment with some OOS players by demanding their public commitment for once. Perhaps that will be enough to solidify their commitment. Apparently the silent commitment (or whatever its interpretation is) doesn't amount to a hill of beans.
4. We're not in good shape with Brent from what I can tell. The Illinois game was probably the wrong one for JT to retreat into a shell in the 2nd half. We should have beaten them down. Instead, Illinois' D played more aggressively and looked to be at a very high level. Brent was watching all the enthusiasm the Illini D had as they ran off the field after another 3 and out.

Read the articles on Still, and it is obvious that distance from home was a huge factor:

Borderline negative recruiting.
A recruit isn't likely to say what negative recruiting tactics were used (but see Doug Worthington). However, we can assume that some of the negative statements were concerning: (a) depth chart; (b) quality of education / graduation rates; and (c) NCAA investigations (yes, the spectre of MoC will still hang over this prgram for a few more years). In addition, JoPa has been known to throw out some personal shots at programs like Ohio State. |

I can only speak to PSU and this is of course subjective (because we do not ever know exactly what is said between a coach and a recruit). You have to read between the lines in the interviews that recruits give to get a sense of tactics. PSU seems to use their high grad rate numbers when going after recruits. Especially minority recruits. In other words, "we will make sure you graduate whether you get injured or not, whether you make the NFL or never see a down at the next level, but those other schools are just interested in what you can do for them on the field..." They seem to use this tactic against OSU, UM, and just about every other program that PSU considers "football factories". They use it on the out of state kids more so than anything else because kids in OH seem to know or at least understand that OSU is concerned with on AND off the field success.

Wad45-recruiting is such an ebb and flow (been following since '84), today is one of the lower points based on info flowing on the DTs....hopefully the tide turns...getting beat out for blue chips by Illinois and PSU (given they got like 627 DL last year) is rough...
