If HS hoopsters can handle it, why can't the football players?

Exactly... IF you set a new earlier date they'll adjust. For one these kids usually know who are going to recruit them by March or April. If the deadline was set I believe the official visits would be set up in the summer. It would actually be better for the coaches and the current players because this way the recruits can be given full attention. Where this cannot be accomplished if you have them to a game... For sure there's no substitution for 105,000 people in the shoe on saturdays..
I think this has become way too much of a circus act though and I just wish kids would maybe take this thing a little bit more serious. Like I saw someone say, if someone says they're coming to OSU then backs out because it was some sort of publicity stunt then that hurts OSU. How? Because if we are in dire need of a DT for example (true) and we have a guy who commits but he was just pulling our chain. Now, because we thought this DT prospect was a lock, we ignored player X who really wanted to be a buckeye who has already committed elsewhere. Now we have ZERO DT's in a recruiting class and we're scrambling to find kids suitable to fill the need. If every kid just gave straight answers we'd be able to fill our needs a lot faster, but thats not the case.

Great read from Bill Curry about the need for an early signing period in College Football and the amount of media attention lavished on recruits nowadays.

Curry is right on, and a mid/late July signing date would be exactly the right time, after camp, before the HS season and 2 a days kick in. I think this would also motivate Tressel and Peterson to be a tad more aggressive in their evaluations/offers-just a little cronstructive criticism!

I think this question would fit in this thread, wasnt sure where else to put it...
But can a recruit take an Official visit during the spring time...If so that could also help the idea of a early signing day...
If instead of waiting to take the visits they took them in the spring or in the summer and then there was a early signing period in say August that would let kids that really want to visit the campuses and see what they have to offer, but also want to get the process over with do it early in the year...
For example a guy like Mike Adams, says he wants to take his visits b4 deciding so he takes them in the spring time signs in August and then can concentrate on his season and not have to worry about recruiters, recruiting services calling him every 5 minutes to get an update...

Official visits are not allowed until opening day of classes in the senior year.

Is there a reason behind that, or that is just the rule?
