Well, he'll have to wait another year to get thrown into the Mr. Football race but a few college coaches have suggested that Trinity junior linebacker Jordan Whiting is the best prospect in the state regardless of class.
The 6-foot-1, 226-pound Whiting is in his second year of starting at linebacker for the perennial power Shamrocks and is regarded as one of the state's best linebackers. His teammate, senior Wes Weitlauf, is another one of the state's best at that position.
Trinity coach Bob Beatty said Whiting has "a lot of work to do," but noted he "has a lot of upside" and that's what the college coaches are looking at.
Whiting told me he's already hearing from a number of colleges and has received scholarship offers from the University of Kentucky and Ohio State University. He's also received a lot of interest from the Notre Dame coaching staff.
"I'm just not trying to worry about any of that right now," Whiting said. "It's exciting after (the season) and it gives me a lot of extra motivation. I'm just trying to focus on my season right now and then let everything else come."
As a junior, Whiting tied for a team-high 53 tackles and had a fumble recovery and had a blocked kick for the Class 4-A state champion Shamrocks.
During the offseason, Whiting said he wanted to gain a little muscle, work on his lateral quickness and his overall speed and he's pleased with the results. He's gone from 210 to 226 pounds, while cutting his 40-yard dash time to 4.59 and his shuttle run from 4.7 to 4.19.
He ran his best times in the latter two at Ohio State's camp and said coach Jim Tressel talked with his parents before he left Columbus.
"I haven't verbally committed or anything but I just talk to their coaches every once in a while right now," Whiting said.
Whiting did admit that he's been a Buckeye fan every since the eighth-grade.
"It always started with U of L and around my eighth-grade year, I became more involved with Ohio State and started watching more of their football games," he said.
But for right now, Whiting said he's going to focus on his schoolwork and trying to help Trinity win a third consecutive state championship.
"I am still at Trinity High School now," he said. "It's just being more focused on what needs to being done in football and more focused on high school. It's exciting for me, but like I said I'm more focused on what I need to do first, play the game and let everything else fall in place."
