I prefer the soft sell. The fact a recruit desires to attend tOSU and play for a team that encourages selflessness is reflected by the recruiting techniques. Recruits who choose to come to Columbus do so not because they were talked into it by a used car salesman, but because they like what the university offers to them as an individual. A mature decision is difficult to make at 18 years old (re: Garrett Goebel). So many wonderful options from which to select. tOSU isn't for everybody. However, it appears that some recruits don't choose tOSU because the staff doesn't inflate their ego enough. I personally don't want that type of character representing the University, because more than not, they end up in some kind of hot water. At this point, Coach T has proven his techniques work (at more than one level, see YSU) and translate into championships- and more importantly good citizens of our communities and representatives of the school later in life, be it the NFL or otherwise. Just because we don't get every 5 star recruit who accepts money/housing to play in school (see Reggie Bush), doesn't mean there aren't more important components of recruit attributes. In Tressel We Trust isn't just a catch phrase, it carries significance; a belief system that carries from fans through players and the people who care about them.

Would you say that guys who commit for other reasons may have some sort of "tainted love"?

Those guys are usually wondering "where did our love go?" by the end of their freshman/sophmore seasons-Willie Williams,Fred Rouse, lots of Volunqueer players.

I would guess that the soft-sell approach would work best, in the long run. You don't want to pressure someone into doing something he doesn't want to do. I would guess that you'd get more people to transfer out if they realize you pressed them into a decision they weren't ready to make.
I think that it today's game, it's far too much of a risk to do anything illegal.
