It's not a knock on Melvin at all. I think he easily belongs in the top 5, and once you get to that level there's not a heck of a lot of difference between the kids.
It just seems that whenever Duane has a one guy that's a bit higher on his board than everyone else's it's always a DE.
Converseley if he's got a flyer that's lower than than the consensus it's usually an OL.
Just a random observation on my part, nothing more.

One thing I find interesting is Duane's ranking of Fellows as #1 in the State.
Is it just me or does it seem like he has a very strong love for Ends? It seems like most years he has a kid at DE bumped up higher than just about anyone else has them.
Anyone else have a similar perception or am I just sweating out Taos' shrooms?

DE is one of the most important positions on the field, especially if you get a kid that is as dominant as Fellows, thus maybe the reason for the stretch at times to have them higher in the rankings...

I see your point and agree. It is somewhat surprising because he does prefer the O-line wide bodies. When was the last time that a true fast big bodied rush DE came out of Ohio? I cannot think of one off-hand. Wilson maybe? There have been some smaller framed kids that will grow into the position. But Fellows seems to have the size already.

Looking at this class and the guys that are vying for the top spot...
Fellows - Kid is a freak off the edge...Has the prototypical body for the DE spot, and if he could keep his speed with his frame could be a freak off the edge, and there is no reason to believe he won't...
Hall - Very good size, great shuttle time he just posted, but is still raw, Adams is the type of kid that you look for in terms of olineman that is top player in state...Hall is not there...Very good player, but you can see reasons why I would not rank him ahead of Fellows...
Simon - He is the one kid that I have above Fellows in this class...Some have questioned some that he might have maxed out his frame, and if true he is already strong enough to play in college, but I do believe that he will grow some more and be a freak in college, and I see a top 15 player in the nation and top player in the state...
Klein - Very good LB and a freak, but with the guys I have listed above I believe he is on the outside looking in...
Carradine - I see him as a Jevon Kearse type freak...Maybe in the minority on this one putting him as the number 3 player in the state, and might say that I am bias towards DE's as well, but it is these types with 6'4'' 225 frames that we have been solely missing in the past couple years...These are the types of kids that are going high in the draft like Gaines Adams...I will say that DE are tough to project at times, but both Fellows and Carradine seem to play with their hands well, and have the speed off the ball to be great pass rushing DE's, and have the frames to be able to hold weight and still keep their speed...
Either way that is a dominant top 5 and would put that up against any top 5 of any state...I would even throw in Barnett, Fields, and Turner...and say top 8...

I think we definitely need at least 1... probably 2.

OK, thanks! Sounds like you both see this particular prospect as a TE primarily, then. Correct? Or are you just addressing the number of TE's you think we'll potentially take?

I agree about Fellows and Carradine being pure pass-rushing DE's, and both having the perfect size and frame to become dominant in college.
Having dominant DE's can have a huge impact on a team and more specifically a defense, a la NY Giants.
Both Fellows and Carradine are players that I see as "must-gets" for OSU because I don't think we can afford to let two incredible pass-rushing DE's like them go elsewhere (especially Illinois).
We've struggled to get consistent pressure at times and these are the types of guys that we need to get to always be getting that pressure on the quarterback without having to blitz a significant amount.
I'm absolutely loving the class in Ohio in '09.
