just a matter of opinion really, i think we could have been the leader for Shrive if we wanted to (I have no inside info though, pure speculation)
you do make a good point however on Mewhort's versatility to play multiple positions and his desire to be 100% all Buckeyes

Let's see here. Hypothetically, say we have 29 open spots this year to give out 29 scholarships for this 2009. Since you cannot "sign" more than 25 in any given class, and we really want 29 we need to have 4 enroll early to count against the 2008 class if we want all 29 to be able to play that year... as long as we had 21 or less in the previous 2008 class so we don't exceed the 25 limit from the year before (correct? or does that not make a difference?). If we had, say, 23 in the 2008 class, we would only have the ability to bring in 27 kids that can play. However, if we want 29 kids, 2 of them could enroll early and 2 of them would have to grayshirt or, as the SEC teams call it, be "sign and place" kids where they sign and then go to pre school for a year to get their grades up for admission standards.

I think you have stated it correctly. But to put it another way, as I understand it - you can not have more than 85 kids on schollie during any academic year. The academic year starts with the fall term. Also, you can not bring in more than 25 kids during any academic year.

The thing to remember is that the limits have nothing to do with when kids sign LOIs. It has to do with when they become actively enrolled as full time students on scholarship. Part timers (ala Boeckman 6 years ago) do not count, nor can they be part of the team. Boeckman enrolled to be eligible for fall practice six years ago but had to leave the team or go full time when fall classes started.

In any case, next years constraint will be 64 returning players. Early enrollees aren't going to help that.

but I'm not sure what's the big deal with James Jackson, he's got nice speed and all but he's not a must have prospect. I have seen a few game films of his and wasn't all that wowed by his play.

If I were to assign a star grade to him it'd be a three star rating, being fast doesn't mean your automatically good.

I doubt any QB that Ohio State feels is of it's calibar will sign on with TP coming on this year.

If the upside is speed I am all for it. You can teach routes. (We had to teach Ginn route running). You can work on the hands. You can work on toughness. You can't teach speed.

I said the same thing in his thread but it was his sophmore film I watched. I still think he is a 4 star and the staff loves him, but I was expecting more on film.

Watch Mewhort's film and I think he was a no brainer to offer. He has a great frame, great wingspan, good athleticism, pulls well, is versatile, and finishes blocks with a mean streak. On top of that, he still is pretty far away from his ceiling imo. I would take Mewhort over either of Linsely or Watt personally, though I want both to become Buckeyes.

I agree. I'm not sure what Mewhort has to do with Shrive anyway. Mewhort will stay inside while Shrive is a tackle.

I have heard the staff thinks of Jackson as their top priority WR.

Miramar, FL WR Stedman Bailey is a name to watch here at the position as well. He catches everything, great speed (4.4) and about the same size as Fields, maybe a little shorter in the 5'11" range.
