I Think The NCAA just needs to pass a bylaw that states that every great High School player with the last name of "Wells" is required to play for TOSU (Jonathan, MO, Beanie, and now Keith) and then let us Dum-ass Buckeye fans actually try to keep them straight.
By the way, cool post.

To very good years, and about to be a top 10 pick in the NFL draft as the #1 DE...On top of that 5th in tOSU history in sacks...Two solid years, his latter being a great year...First team all-american, and he can't 5 stars...That is some tough rating...

I'm with crazy on this one. If 1st Team AA dosn't equate into a 5* I don't know what does.
Great job, though, on the list guys. But The "Big-Vern" one jumps out.
Peace.

Don't know if you guys have read previous posts but 5 stars are reserved for the Buckeye Legends not just the great players. I think AJ qualified. I think they are comparing the 5 star guys to Archie Griffin, Jack Tatum et al... number one draft picks are nice but 5 stars in this instance are reserved for the legends.

Here are the DB ratings from the classes of 2002, 2003, and 2004: 2002 Final rankings: Group (2-1/2*); Salley (3-1/2*); Everett (2-1/2*); Mitchell (3*); Underwood (1*); Roberts (1*); Antonio Smith (3-1/2*)
2003 Final rankings: Group (1-1/2*); Whitner (4*); Youboty (4*); Lukens (1* for sticking with the program); Guilford (0*); Hiley (0*)
2004 Initial rankings: Group (1*); Lane (1-1/2*); Patterson (1-1/2*); Welch (1*); Underwood (0*)
3-year average: 1.8333 Obviously, the 2005 class (Jenkins, Washington, Russell, O'Neal) will help push the average up. And don't forget that two of the best DB prospects (Gonzalez in 2003, Ginn in 2004) were switched to WR. But in general, your point is well-taken: from 2002-2004, only five of the fifteen DB recruits were solid contributors (and one of them was originally a walk-on), and nine have been outright busts.

The fifth star is generally reserved for the truly exceptional performers like A.J. Hawk (2-time All American, Lombardi Award); Troy Smith (Heisman Trophy); and James Laurinaitis (2-time All American; Nagurski Trophy; Butkus Award). Even though he didn't have the major accolades, Ted Ginn got the fifth star because he was a unique talent who could literally change the course of a game on any given play.
FWIW, Gholston will not be considered a first-team All American by Ohio State because he was not named by one of the "official" selectors.

But it is not always the accolades that makes a player...I would say that Gholston was more valuable to our defense than Laurinaitis this year...
He may not of been talked about in the media as being the top DE in the country, but outside of chris Long I think that he could hold that title...
I understand where you are coming from interms of holding the 5th star for the greats, but while Gholston wasn't highly publicized like those guys you mentioned what he brought to the field here was 5 star worth IMO...
14.5 sacks and 3 in a game against Michigan and 1 against in the best LT in college football, not to mention the only sack I believe we had in the NC game as well...
Best player on the best defense in the country...JMHO tho...
