Fort Wayne Harding running back Roderick Smith (6 feet 3/215 pounds) grabbed headlines last week when he picked up a scholarship offer from Ohio State. Along with the Buckeyes, Smith also has an offer from Iowa and is getting attention from schools such as Oklahoma, Purdue, Texas, Arkansas, Michigan State and Notre Dame.

"Ohio State said he's the best running back in the nation," Harding coach Sherwood Haydock said. "Rod is a big back, but runs like he is 5-10. He is very elusive, can spin in traffic and has quick feet. I think once people see his film, they'll believe he's a top-100 prospect and one of the best athletes in the nation."

You can't argue with Smith's production. He has rushed for about 4,800 yards in his high school career and averages more than 7.0 yards a carry. Haydock said Smith has been legitimately timed at 4.5 seconds in the 40-yard dash.

"He has great speed and power," Haydock said. "He is a great athlete. He reads his blocking very well and can catch the ball very well. I have had three Big Ten receivers and he is just as good as them if he were a receiver."

Along with his football accolades, Smith was a first-team all-conference selection in basketball. His coach said he's famous at his school for his "massive dunks." He also has a long jump of around 23 feet and a bench press of 300 pounds.

"I think once the secret gets out on Rod, then people will understand what I'm talking about," Haydock said. "We've got some special talent in Indiana this year, and Rod is definitely one of the best of the best. We think he's at the top of the charts."

These recent developments have me pretty excited to get over to Ft. Wayne and watch Rod play. I am interested in their schedule (whenever that becomes available) and even though I am not the one you guys want the details from, I will certainly give you what I can.

If that's true and OSU really feels that way, I bet they tell him if he commits they're done recruiting at RB. This one could be over before long based on Smith's perceived interest.

Based on the recruitment of other RB's Smith looks like OSU's main target. Either Tressel is a fool (not likely) or Tressel thinks Smith is the nations best back or I like making false tricodomies.

Lots of hype about him from coaches and people that have seen him. Hopefully video of him will surface.

If it did go down that way, I wonder if they could/would continue recruiting Spencer Ware & Corey Brown as athletes.

IMO they take 2 this year. Still go after Ware if he commits. I think Ware is a can't miss prospect.

I agree but no matter what there won't be any lack of depth at RB position I live an hour from Ft Wayne so I'm hoping to check him out a couple times this fall.

My take is that you can't turn down either...we might scare one or both away anyways. Ware is not only an Ohio boy, but he has the goods. Brown is so explosive and can easily play WR...I view Brown as a 5 star and I think his injury last year hurt his stock. As for Smith, I am very excited about him. From all accounts, he is the real deal but needs to get his grades in order. My take is if Hurst can get the 5 star rating, being from Indiana won't prohibit Smith from being a 5 star. It makes it tougher, but we really need to see video. Still excited if his grades pan out though.
