Rick O'Brien: Campbell leads army of running backs

POSTED: October 15, 2009
By Rick O'Brien
Inquirer Columnist

We resume our top 10 football rankings with the best running backs in Southeastern Pennsylvania.

This was not an easy chore, as the area is flooded with quick-footed, dangerous and powerful ballcarriers. By season's end, the 1,000-yard rushing list (2,000 for some) will be a lengthy one.

Since compiling this list was so difficult, we've cranked it up to 15. We've also thrown in 20 other standouts that just as easily could have made the cut.

...

3. Corey Brown, Cardinal O'Hara, senior, 6-1, 195. When healthy, the Ohio State recruit who is also a lock-down cornerback, is as explosive as anyone. For the second time, he has been slowed by a knee injury.

Football: O?Hara can?t find the final answer
Published: Sunday, October 25, 2009
By JOHN LOHN

WHITEMARSH ? During his four years at Cardinal O?Hara, Corey Brown has established a reputation for producing big plays. He was at it again Saturday night, notching a huge touchdown catch for the Lions in their Catholic League showdown with St. Joseph?s Prep.
Quote:
Brown looked fully recovered from the right knee strain that forced him to miss last week?s victory over Archbishop Ryan. After Desmon Peoples gave the Hawks a 7-0 edge in the first quarter, Brown tied the game before halftime with a 5-yard run that followed his 26-yard scamper. Meanwhile, his 20-yard touchdown catch answered a 6-yard scoring run by Mornhinweg. Brown, bound for Ohio State, finished with 68 rushing yards and 50 receiving yards.

FOOTBALL: Brown?s big plays help O?Hara roll to victory
Published: Friday, October 30, 2009

Special to the Times

PHILADELPHIA ?- When Cardinal O?Hara faced off with Father Judge for the second time last season, Crusaders running back Curtis Wortham stole the show.

As a junior, Wortham torched O?Hara for four touchdowns while breaking a school record for rushing yards in a game, all while shattering the Lions hopes again ? this time in the Catholic League AAAA semifinals.

?Last year, we played our hearts out and all, but (Judge) was such a good team last year,? Lions multi-purpose threat Corey Brown said.

This year, it was Brown who had the four touchdowns and made sure history didn?t repeat itself for O?Hara as he led the Lions to a 49-10 rout of the Crusaders at Northeast High?s Charles Martin Memorial Stadium.

Brown finished the night with 305 total yards ? 157 rushing and 148 receiving ? and a touchdown run and three touchdown catches.

?We wanted to get one win against them,? said Brown, referring to the seniors beating Judge and ended a four-game skid against the Crusaders. ?We were flat in the first half, but in the second half we executed, made our adjustments and played good.?

Buckeye running back/wide receiver commitment Corey Brown led Springfield (Pa.) Cardinal O'Hara to a 49-10 victory over Father Judge yesterday.

Brown accounted for over 300 combined rushing and receiving yards and had four touchdowns as Cardinal O'Hara moved to 8-1 on the season.

Cardinal O'Hara takes on Philadelphia LaSalle next Saturday before heading into the playoffs.

Brown was a dual threat as O'Hara rolled
Published: Tuesday, November 3, 2009
By JOHN LOHN

SPRINGFIELD - Rare are the games in which an athlete eclipses 100 yards rushing and receiving. Cardinal O'Hara's Corey Brown turned in such a performance last week, helping the Lions bounce back from a loss to St. Joseph's Prep.

As O'Hara rolled to a 49-10 rout of Father Judge in Catholic League action, the Ohio State recruit had a huge game offensively. In addition to running for 157 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries, Brown had five receptions for 148 yards and three scores.

The performance, not surprisingly, handed Brown MVP honors among the Independent Schools at Monday night's weekly meeting of the Delaware County Football Coaches Association, held at Moe?s Grille in Springfield.

The Del Val League again named Interboro's Joe Pfaff as its MVP. In the Bucs' 41-6 throttling of University City, Pfaff excelled at linebacker, scored once on the ground and returned a punt 75 yards for a touchdown.

Garnet Valley's Alex Warden was the Central League MVP for helping the Jaguars to a 20-14 win over Ridley that all but assured the Jags and Green Raiders will share the Central crown. Warden ran for 116 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries and had two catches for 88 yards and a score.

Other weekly honors went to:

Five minutes with ...
POSTED: November 5, 2009

Today, we talk with Cardinal O'Hara running back/defensive back Corey Brown:

Why did you decide to go to Ohio State?

They're a great team and I liked the campus.

Who's your biggest role model?

West Virginia running back Noel Devine. I've been following him since he was a sophomore in high school.

Who's your favorite professional athlete?

Cavaliers forward LeBron James. I personally think he's the best all-time already.

What's your favorite video game?

Call of Duty: World at War for the PS3.

What's your most difficult subject in school?

Trigonometry.

What are some of your goals for the rest of the season?

Win the Catholic League championship.

What's the most memorable game you've ever played in?

A playoff game my freshman year against La Salle. I think I had 120 yards. That was my first big game.

What's the biggest difference in your game between your freshman and senior seasons?

I got bigger and I got faster. Every summer I just go out and work harder and harder.

What's your pregame superstition?

I'm the most relaxed person. I'm the joker. I'm very loose.

What's the best piece of advice you've ever received as a player?

Keep your schoolwork up. That's the most important thing.
