'10 OH LB Scott McVey
Height: 6'1
Wt: 220 Cleveland St. Ignatius High School Watched Scott against a good Northmont team tonight and he was very impressive. Very active feet, always around the ball, good closing speed, good size (though he may be near maxing out his frame), and a very heady player. He has a 4.0 GPA I believe, or higher. Not much more info to provide quite yet as far as profile, picture, etc., but Coach Tressel invited him to watch the YSU game tomorrow, so obviously there is some OSU interest. Looks like a guy to keep an eye on at least. Scott is also very interested in Boston College and Notre Dame. |

My bad, I didn't know he already had a thread. But yeah, McVey could be the top LB in the state next year for sure.

Better than the likes of Jordan Hicks, Jamel Turner and Zac Rosenbauer?

Good question. Hicks is the top LB in the state next year imo without question. Turner I believe ends up as a DE or LEO prospect, though Turner is likely the top player period next year. So in my books, McVey and Rosenbauer may have a battle for #2 LB in the state. Rosenbauer has taken advantage of combines, so Scott is going to have to do the same next year but I feel he has the tools to become an OSU caliber LB, if he hasn't already maxed out.

10/23 From the ND site...talks about his team utilizes his talents in their defensive scheme...has been to games at OSU and Michigan and is hearing from BC, ND and Illinois. Grew up an OSU fan but is interested in ND because of the other Ignatius players that have gone there. |

A few notes:
-A reported 22 tackles against St. Xavier (solo+assists)...not official - A reported 12 tackles against St. Ed's (solo+assists)...again, not official - Returned a fumble 57 yards for a TD against Ed's - Excellent 400 runner in track - Camped at OSU last year, possibly will again this year...interest seems to be really picking up, especially with Boston College |

Anyone who watched Iggy's 8-7 win over Glenville saw why McVey is going to be highly recruited. He blew past Marcus Hall in the 1st quarter and so Glenville often had to have the RB help to the right side to keep McVey from getting to Owens. Impressive looking kid...not a DE at the next level but plays well there in HS...definitely a LB or even possibly a SS at the next level.

McVey reminds me of Gardiner from last year...the tweener kids have had mixed results in Columbus.

Personally, I'm not sure that he is an automatic offer like some believe...

My opinion...Scott is just now coming into his own. This is his first year of varsity football and he has shined. Is this because many a times he lines up opposite of Fox, meaning they have to run at one or the other (Fox plays a SS/LB position)? I would be interested to see how well he does next year without Fox, as well as in combines. However, our staff loves big guys that can run and while Scott is only 6-1, he is 220 lbs and can fly in the 400. I think the staff offers or peaks interest at a track meet, ala Nate Williams, if they do. Or maybe at camp, since last time they saw him he still hadn't developed.
In any event, I certainly think McVey is a talent but we have at least 3 LB's coming in for '09, and have Turner and Hicks as our focus for '10. I feel good on Turner and I hope Hicks comes around, but I just don't see us taking more than 3 LB's, and I just don't see us trying to stay in Ohio for all 3, even with a year like '10 (we almost say that every year in Ohio for LB's). So while Turner and Hicks are the better LB's imo, I think the staff will, at the least, keep close tabs on McVey. Only downside to that approach is that we'll have a heck of a time getting him if ND offers, in the case that we want him. |
