...But it's the Big Macs backfield, bolstered by Division I prospect Mike Hull and the return of Chad Hagan, that has Trinity concerned.

"Canon-McMillan has the best backfield in the WPIAL and I'm not making that up," Dalton said. "Hagan is just ridiculous and he's just one of a handful of offensive weapons. This is like those old Wash High teams. In the past, we could take one of their backs and say, 'If they can beat us with that one, let them.' Now, every one of those kids can go the distance."

Each week, we'll break down the Friday night game I'm attending. Tonight, I'm off to Canonsburg for the annual Trinity vs. Canon-McMillan contest.

Here's what I'm looking for:

We all know the immense talents of Mike Hull. The Varsity Letters is greatly looking forward to seeing Chad Hagan's return to the football team. If Hagan is as into playing football as he is basketball, he'll be one of the WPIAL's top five recruits next year - easy.

Dalton has a Big Mac attack
After only one game Trinity High School coach Ed Dalton believes he knows what school has the best set of running backs in the WPIAL.

"Canon-McMillan just might have the best backfield," Dalton said. "Everybody knew about Mike Hull, but the [Chad] Hagan kid, who is back out this year, is every bit as good."

Hull, who is 6 feet 1 and 215 pounds, started last year in the backfield for the Big Macs and rushed for more that 1,000 yards.

Hagan, 6-1, 210, saw plenty of playing time for Canon-McMillan as a freshman, then decided not to play football last season.

In Canon-McMillan's 32-7 season-opening victory against Trinity, Hull rushed 16 times for 103 yards and a touchdown, and Hagan carried 11 times for 74 yards and a score.

A Sleeper At Canon-McMillan

Hull is not the only major college prospect at Canon-McMillan. Junior running back/safety Chad Hagan is not as well known as Hull, but it will only be a matter of time until his name comes up among the top Class of 2010 prospects in the Keystone State.

The 6-foot-1, 210-pound Hagan was a varsity starter at both outside linebacker and running back his freshman year. He rushed for 493 yards that season.

However as one of the top basketball players on the Canon-McMillan team when he was a freshman, he decided not to play football his sophomore year so he could concentrate on basketball.

Hagan plans to attend the Illinois at Penn State game this weekend. He also will likely attend the Michigan at Penn State game Oct. 18 and possibly the Penn State at Ohio State game Oct. 25 and the West Virginia at Pitt game Nov. 28.

Hagen looked impressive in week 1 against Trinity (Sweat and Miller's high school). Hull still looks like the better of the two IMO, but Hagen definitely has the skills to be a D-1 player. I didn't know he was getting any interest though. I can't believe I let you scoop me on this one Wade.

I was hping to hear you chime in on this one...it sounds like he could porject at RB or a LB/S hybrid. Have you had a chance to see him on defense?

He definitely has the build/speed to be an effective LB/S hybrid. He flies around to the ball and he did catch my eye a couple of times, but I'll be honest, I've only seen one game so far this year and the majority of my attention was on Hull. I plan to go this Friday and will pay closer attention to Hagan this time around.

Not to hijack Hagan's thread, I was surprised to see any interest on the part of Hull for Ohio State. I still maintain that he is PSU's to loose though. If he's going to show cursory interest though, maybe time for a thread on here?

I think the thought process behind the lack of a Hull thread was best described by a PSU poster on RP:

If he goes somewhere other than PSU, the NCAA should launch an immediate investigation on the school he chooses.

Illinois travels to Penn State this weekend for a key Big Ten game. The Nittany Lions are expecting a good group of recruits to attend the game including a super junior, linebacker/safety/running back Mike Hull from Canonsburg (Pa.) Canon-McMillan. The 6-foot-1 and 212-pound Hull already has scholarship offers from Penn State, Pitt, Michigan and West Virginia. Hull's father Tom Hull played linebacker for Penn State as well as in the NFL for the Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers. Mike Hull's junior teammate, running back/safety Chad Hagan will also attend the Illinois at Penn State game. Hagan was a varsity starter his freshman year on the Canon-McMillan football and basketball teams. He decided to concentrate on basketball and did not play football as a sophomore. However Hagan is back out on the football field this year, starting at both running back and free safety. He too is a Big Ten type prospect.

Mike Hull is planning to see games at some other schools in the next couple months including Ohio State, Pitt and West Virginia. Hull plans to attend the Penn State at Ohio State game and Chad Hagan might also be in Columbus that weekend.

Canon-McMillan's offense exploded against winless Baldwin as the Big Macs earned a 53-6 win in the Great Southern Conference.

Chad Hagan rushed for 135 yards on just seven carries, taking two for touchdowns, and also caught a 25-yard touchdown from Steve Roach. Mike Hull rushed for 82 yards and scored twice.

Canon-McMillan (2-0, 4-2), which rushed for 448 yards, had six touchdown plays of 25 yards or more.

Rallying from a two-touchdown halftime deficit, the Big Macs (5-2, 3-0) toppled visiting Mt. Lebanon (1-6, 1-2) in the Great Southern Conference. Mike Hull got the comeback started with a 31-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, and it was followed by a two fourth-quarter scores by Chad Hagan, covering 2 and 6 yards. Mt. Lebanon, which had 182 yards passing in the first half, was held to 10 yards in the second half. The Big Macs rolled up 24 first downs and 392 yards total offense compared to 12 first downs and 243 yards for the Blue Devils. Hull led Canon-McMillan with 114 yards rushing on 23 carries.

The Nittany Lions already have a commitment from one outstanding class of 2010 prospect at Canonsburg (Pa.) Canon-McMillan: linebacker Mike Hull. Another Canon-McMillan star, Chad Hagan, might get a Penn State scholarship offer.

"Penn State is showing a lot of interest," Hagan said. "Coach (Tom) Bradley called my coach (on Monday) and asked for my transcripts. I think they are going to offer."

FWIW, this kid has been overhyped by Kurelic and the PA experts think he is a good athlete, but not really one of the best prospects in the state. There are about 20 kids in PA with multiple offers already and he isn't one of them. He will eventually get some offers because he is an athlete, but I doubt we will be one of them.

From the Pitt site...no offers but Pitt, Penn State and Ohio State have indicated they will likely offer and favors those three...has been to OSU for a junior day and plans to go to Pitt and PSU.
