Hoban had five players, all seniors, named to the first team. Hoban's first-teamers were Carter, wide receiver Brian Slack, offensive lineman David Sutter, defensive lineman Justin Gordon and defensive back Dominic Williams.

Making the second team from the Knights was junior kicker Zach Christensen.

And earning honorable mention for the Knights were senior defensive back Zach Buzzelli-Andes, senior punter Pat Kramer, freshman wide receiver Greg McMullen and senior linebacker Andy Volcheck.

The Ohio State football coaches hosted some of the top juniors and sophomores in the state of Ohio on Sunday as the Buckeye basketball team took on Illinois.

In addition to some outstanding class of 2010 and 2011 prospects, a super 2012 prospect, Akron (Ohio) Hoban defensive end Greg McMullen, was in Columbus.

The 6-foot-4 and 220-pound McMullen had an outstanding first season for Hoban and stamped himself as someone Ohio State recruiting fans are going to hearing a lot about over the next few years.

McMullen visited Ohio State on Sunday and toured the facilities with approximately a dozen other prospects.

Definitely a great prospect. He along with Sylvania Southview's Allan Gant and Trotwood-Madison's George Bradley are my three early top picks for the class of 2012.

I don't recall hearing much about him during the football season, but I do know he's carrying Hoban's basketball team. I hear he's just a physical freak.

I think the writer of that article saw that McMullen received Honorable Mention honors, looked up his name on the Hoban roster, and saw that he was listed as a WR. Nevertheless, I'm not sure he saw any time on offense this year, rather playing just defensive end. BTW, Hoban has another Class of '12 athlete (LaTroy Lewis, a 6-2 215 TE/DE) who should develop into a D-I prospect.

same here. He's in the ABJ paper a lot having great stats for each game. They list him as a senior but, that might be his cousin

CBS MaxPreps lists sophomore Greg McMullen in Top 100

According to the Web site MaxPreps, Hoban's Greg McMullen is among the best sophomore football players in the United States. The 6-foot-5, 215-pound defensive lineman is in Stephen Spiewak's Class of 2012 Top 100. Offensively, he was an all-district honorable mention selection last season. McMullen also shines on the basketball court.

The Akron area is sometimes overlooked on the Ohio scene, with places like Cincinnati and Cleveland hogging media attention. But fans and recruits would be wise to keep a careful eye on Akron, as the 2011 and 2012 classes are well stocked with talent, including Archbishop Hoban defensive lineman Greg McMullen.

At 6-5, 215 pounds, McMullen stood out on the basketball court and football field. In the fall, he was a terror to opposing offenses, with his long arms and quick step at defensive end. Offensively, he was an all-district honorable mention selection for his work at wide receiver.

His teammate, LaTroy Lewis, also suited up for the varsity team as a ninth grader, and could develop into a Division I talent himself. Both will help comprise what appears to be a strong year for recruits in the Buckeye State.

FWIW, the Plain Dealer football preview lists McMullen as 6-5 250. If that's accurate, he's really packed it on over the summer and a move down the line becomes a possibility once he gets to college.

Thanks for the link. This kid really sounds like a good kid and well spoken as well. I wish all the best for him. Ge'R done in the classroom and keep improving as a player, I am sure he will get his shine. Hopefully, in the end, if he does everything he needs to on and off the field, we'll be able to see him in Scarlet and Gray. GO BUCKS!!!

2012 CLASS
CONSIDERING: Too early to call but mentioned wanting to play with his teammate LaTroy Lewis. McMullen is already hearing from Ohio State.
PERFORMANCE: Due to an injured left wrist, McMullen has been playing with basically one hand this season. Against Padua Franciscan in round one of the playoffs, he had about a half dozen tackles, and consistently put pressure on the quarterback.
STRENGTHS: When college coaches see this kid walk in the door, then find out he can move and he is a bright kid, there will be no debate about offering him. McMullen is a nationally elite type of athlete. He carries 255 pounds with ease, and one must assume he has not had much weight training since breaking his wrist during the AAU basketball season.
WEAKNESSES: How big will he get? Is there a position change down the road? The good thing is, McMullen is playing end in a 3-4 defense, so he is mixing it up a lot on the inside. But McMullen may have to adjust to a position change as his body gets bigger. - G.L.
