With Pettrey and Thoma both leaving after this year and only Buchanan returning, it would seem that a kicking specialist is needed in this class.

OSU, IMO could indeed use another specialist for next season, but I'm not sure Basil fits the bill. Don't get me wrong, he's a fine kicker and a good punter, but every specialist Tressel has offered out of HS has also played another position as well (Nugent was a QB, Pettrey was a QB, Trepasso was a TB, Buchanan was a WR). It is true that other specialists under Tressel at OSU have not played other positions, but none of them were offered scholarships out of HS by Tressel, and instead earned their scholarships after walking on. Basil only kicks and punts, so he would be an exception to the rule if offered.

Ft. Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas has a good kicker who used to be a QB, so he could be a specialist to keep an eye on.

I don't know whether this is totally accurate with respect to Tressel's thinking on the subject, but there is a school of thought that specialists who play other positions in HS are able to mesh better with college teammates than those who don't. Although not true across the board, many specialists are regarded as "soft" or "flaky" by their teammates because they are off by themselves practicing, don't have to hit or be hit, or have unusual superstitions or approach to their craft. Recruiting players who play other positions in HS means you are getting guys who know to take or give a hit and who interact with the rest of the team during practices-- theoretically creating a tigher bond with the rest of the team.

Kick 55 yard FG's to win gams like Nugent and you will win people over I'm sure. I think you guys are analyzing the situation a tad much. Make kicks and people will respect you...plain and simple.

It's not my school of thought-- I would personally just want the guy best capable of doing the job. However, there are coaches out there who do buy into this, for better or worse-- of that I'm positive.

Basil also plays on the soccer team where he was 3rd Team All Ohio in 2007 and 2nd team in 2008. He was elected one of the team Captains for the 2009 season so the players on the team respect him. He is a very good athlete who happens to kick and punt only on the football team.

Basil receives 1st full scholarship offer from the United States Air Force Academy. Will have 2 visits at school this week from Big Ten schools; Michigan on Monday and Purdue on Friday.

Kicker/punter Drew Basil (Chillicothe, Ohio) headed south to SEC country and came away with his second scholarship offer.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder attended Kentucky's camp last Friday and showed the Wildcats' staff his ability to punt, kickoff and hit field goals.

"The (Kentucky) coaches had seen my video," Basil said. "Then in person they thought I did well."

However, Basil did not immediately land an offer from the Wildcats. He headed back to Lexington on Wednesday and kicked and punted for Kentucky coach Rich Brooks.

"Then he offered me," Basil said. "I told him thank you and it is great to get an offer. Then I went on a tour of the facilities and saw the academic center."

Basil has offers from Kentucky and Air Force, and said he is looking at both schools. He is also looking at Purdue, Ohio State, Michigan, LSU, Alabama and Cincinnati.

He worked out at Ohio State's punting and kicking camp on Thursday and is going to visit Iowa State on Friday. Basil said he does not have a favorite at this point.

Basil lands first Big Ten offer

After landing a scholarship offer from Kentucky last week, kicker and punter Drew Basil (Chillicothe, Ohio) landed his first Big Ten offer over the weekend.

"I received an offer from Purdue on (Saturday) morning," Basil said.

The 6-2, 190-pounder has offers from Purdue, Kentucky and Air Force. Ohio State, Michigan, LSU, Alabama, Cincinnati and Iowa State are among the other schools showing interest.

Basil, who visited Iowa State on Friday, averaged 40.2 yards per punt during his junior season and made eight-of-14 field goals with his long coming from 50 yards.

Looks a lot like Ben. Being able to get top combo kickers in your program is a big plus, IMO.
OSU is without a doubt kickerU, but I don't know if that's a 100% good thing. It is amazing the type of talent we've had kicking.
