Well yeah, I'm assuming that you can't just take official visits to any school you like. I assume there's some sort of invitation process.

Agreed. I am surprised as well, that he is going to be on an official visit when no written offer has been extended. I am guessing that is mainly a formality at this time.

I'm dense. Is it the consensus that Sharrif wasn't offered because the staff's opinion was that he wasn't seriously considering us and was essentially a lock to PSU?

I think that is accurate. If he visits, shows genuine interest, and the staff likes him, i think he gets an offer. Losing the DT recruit to Duke and Hankins needing to still qualify, puts Sahrrif in play. Not a great year for interior DL's. I dont think the staff reaches. If they cannot land a stud, they wait until next year IMO. It takes a year or two for a DT to adapt to tOSU system.

Nobody here would exactly know the staff's thought process so I don't think that message board consensus means a lot.

That said,
- We have offered plenty of longshots before and landed some of them at the end.

-Floyd is planning an official visit here so it doesn't look like he is such a long shot.

-I don't know what kind of a player Floyd is (not watched his film or anything) but I don't understand the "he is ranked high in Rivals, so we should have offered him already" posts. Just to give some perspective, and not necessarily saying history will repeat itself, but do you remember the last highly recruited, offers from all over the country DT prospect from Philly?

Yes, it is none other than the famous "Ann Arbor" lion, Marques Slocum.

Until the last part, I was going to scream BARKSDALE!!!

In any case, he's ranked high by both recruiting classes. Reminds me a bit of the Tajh Boyd recruitment, though he was offered very late. Hope we land him eventually.

Nation's top DT Sharrif Floyd to visit Gainesville
Topics
By Chris Hays
Sentinel Staff Writer
August 15, 2009

It's that time of year when high school football players start scheduling visits to prospective colleges and the mad rush started this week.

The biggest news of local interest is that Philadelphia George Washington High's Sharrif Floyd, the No. 1-ranked defensive tackle in the nation according to Rivals.com, has decided upon four visits and Gainesville is one of his choices.

That's good news for Urban Meyer and the Florida Gators, for Floyd is a 6-foot-3, 310-pound monster who is next to impossible to block.

He will also see the Gators when he takes an official visit to South Carolina the same weekend Florida is in Columbia. Floyd will also visit Ohio State and Penn State. Rumors have surfaced, however, that Floyd may have crossed the home state Nittany Lions off his list.

Sharrif Floyd | Highlights
(Philadelphia, Penn./George Washington)
College: Undecided

Floyd hails from the city of brotherly love, but he does not exhibit a lot of that love towards opponents. He is a good looking defensive tackle prospect physically and for a kid around 300 pounds he carries his weight well and can move. He needs to keep developing his technique, but he displays quickness off the ball and the ability to push or run by blockers.

By Farrell...Penn State, Southern Cal, Rutgers, Miami, Michigan, Illinois and UCLA are in the mix for an official...also considering BC and UNC where he has already visited...OSU has been dropped because he didn't know if he had an offer or not.

Floyd working on USC visit date
By Phil Kornblut

DL Sharrif Floyd (6-3 311) of Philadelphia wants to make his official visit to USC the weekend of the Clemson game according to a source familiar with his plans. That would be the weekend after Thanksgiving, November 27-29. The hangup for that weekend could be the playoffs. Should Floyd's team advance deep into the post-season, he likely would be playing a game that weekend. Floyd plans to take official visits to USC and Florida. He's also looking at Penn State and Ohio State.

Floyd has no favorites or scheduled visits, but does name Florida and Miami on his list, along with the likes of USC, Penn State and Michigan.

No. 74 -- DL Sharrif Floyd (Philadelphia, Pa./George Washington)
Floyd has said he will likely take all five official visits and Penn State, Florida and South Carolina will be three of them. USC is in the mix as well, and if he gets a formal scholarship offer from the Trojans, look for him to make an official visit there as well. He has a few other schools on his list too, but I think his decision comes down to one of those four schools.
Prediction: Florida

From Farrell's Weekly Whispers - Sharrif Floyd has set his 5 officials visits that does not include OSU, however, OSU sent Sharrif another written offer. It appears the first offer was sent to the wrong place. As a side note, USC also sent his offer to the wrong place.
