Parkersburg (WV) HS

Height: 5-foot-10
Weight: 185 lbs

Charleston Daily Mail - West Virginia News and Sports - Prep Sports - Point Pleasant's Wasonga transferring to Parkersburg?

Quote:
The 5-foot-10, 185-pound Wasonga led the Black Knights to their first postseason appearance since the 1998 Class AAA playoffs in November. He was a Class AA All-State selection after he rushed for 1,945 yards and 23 touchdowns in 11 games.
Wasonga's a Big Red - Rick Ryan - The Charleston Gazette - West Virginia News and Sports

Quote:
The Allan Wasonga saga looks like it's finally over.

The multi-talented athlete, who starred as a sophomore at Point Pleasant, has been ruled eligible to compete at Parkersburg. The Secondary School Activities Commission completed its check on Wasonga's status this week.

"Those issues have been reviewed, and the student in question is an eligible student at Parkersburg High School,'' said Gary Ray, the SSAC's executive director. "Everybody understands the situation, and everybody has been communicated with. We wish everybody the best.''

Wallace, Wasonga for real - NewsandSentinel.com | News, Sports, Jobs, Community Information - Parkersburg News and Sentinel

Quote:
It's rare when two legitimate candidates for the Kennedy Award play in the same game.

But that's what took place on Friday night at Stadium Field when Brooke quarterback Cotey Wallace and Parkersburg running back Allan Wasonga found themselves on opposing teams.

When the game finally ended nearly three hours after it started with Brooke rallying for a 43-42 victory, the 5,000 fans who watched the season opener knew they had gotten their money's worth and then some.

This was a shootout like no other.

One team would get the ball and score, then the other would do the same.

Wasonga, making his Parkersburg debut, was even better than advertised. He carried the ball 23 times for 247 yards and three touchdowns on runs of 79, 32 and 6 yards.

He had one run where he literally bounced off so many Brooke defenders, it was like watching a pinball machine.

I asked a buddy of mine who has great connections with WVU about him....this is what he had to say

"OSU all the way. Dad is an alumni and in some way works for the university. They are from Africa but live in WV. Not your tranditional WV kid that loves the instate school. Kind of reminds you of a little faster version of the RB you picked up out of Jeannette, PA."

Not a knock on Jordan Hall, but I don't think that he ever had this kind of production.

Admittedly, I don't know anything about a competition discrepancy.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Parkersburg already pretty evenly divided between OSU and WVU fans?

With Jordan's performances thus far through camps and practices, I would imagine the staff would another one of him.

Anyway, I like him..

Red Devils, Point clash Friday night in AA 'Top 10' showdown at Flinn Field

from October 2008

DOUBLE TROUBLE ? Brothers Caleb (left) and Allan Wasonga spell double trouble for AA #10 Pt. Pleasant?s opponents. Caleb Wasonga is a senior split end and defensive back, while sophomore Allan Wasonga is Point?s top rusher with over 1,300 yards and 18 touchdowns through seven games and is a starting linebacker. Both Wasonga brothers possess sprinter?s speed.

Quote:
Point's Allan Wasonga was awarded the "Overall MVP" of the freshman class at the Ultimate 100 combine in New Jersey this past weekend. This combine was an invite only combine that stemmed from the National Underclassmen Combine in Columbus, where he won "Overall MVP" in his session as well.

Wasonga (5'9, 180 pounds) was not the only Point Pleasant product at the Ultimate 100 combine. Clay Krebs (Sophomore, 6'2, 265 pounds) was in the sophomore group. Clay did not perform as well as he did a few days earlier at the event he attended in Columbus and did not receive any awards at the event.

Rivals posted the following today in an article about the event:

"The "Overall MVP" award was given to Allan Wasonga, Hughes' teammate on the Royal Blue squad. Wasonga, from Point Pleasant (W.Va.) High, is a defensive back/running back who played both ways in the tournament. Wasonga tested well in the morning and arguably was the most versatile player at the event."

I am not an expert scout, but I am impressed with the way he follows his blockers and he hit the hole extremely hard. He hits full speed fast and seems to be able to cut on a dime (some of those cuts on that film was in the rain also). Quick feet, great cuts, great vision and a natural at following blocks. Can't really tell if he can break tackles since no one on the film could even get a hand on him.

In regards to the comment about being similar to Hall, but faster...I like the sound of that. Hall seems pretty fast to me, so faster can only be better.

I was told Wasonga's comp isn't too tough. He's playing against DL's with most kids around the 200 mark. Never seen it first hand though.

* And I'm not sure about the Parkersburg OSU/WVU split, but I'm sure some of those more familiar with the JJ recruitment could tell you.

I live right across the river from Parkersburg (and work in the city), and the population there is split about 15% Buckeye 10% Marshall and 75% Mountaineer. And most of those Mountaineer fans have no love for OSU. Now, about 5 years ago (before the Pat White era), it was closer to an even split of WVU fans and OSU fans with Marshall close behind.

Wasonga is nearly worshipped by the northern half of the city after his first great game with the Big Reds. I work most friday nights, but hopefully I'll get to see him sometime this season. He is playing for the same school that Josh Jenkins won a State title with, but the team is in a down year. Jenkins' little brother is also on the team.

I don't know if it's his stature, speed, and number, but he reminds me a lot of Garrett Wolfe... with some slippery moves not too unlike Fitzgerald Touissant from the '09 class. The kid definetly has a style all his own though. And not bad Sophomore year film, that's for sure!!

Dick Rod's gotta be drooling watching that highlight reel...

Parkersburg pastes HHS - The Herald Dispatch

Quote:
September 19, 2009 @ 12:00 AM

DAVID WALSH

The Herald-Dispatch

HUNTINGTON -- Parkersburg played a half without standout running back Allan Wasonga, but still left the field up 21-17 on Huntington High at the break.

Wasonga, 5-foot-10, 200-pound junior, got cleared to play in the second half and wasted little time making his typical impact. He carried four straight times to take the Big Reds on a 42-yard scoring drive, getting the last 10 for the score. His numbers for the third period added up to nearly 150 yards and two more scores. Add a TD on the first possession in the fourth and his night was over and the Big Reds rolled to a 63-24 victory over the Highlanders on Friday night at Bob Sang Field.

Wasonga piled up 235 yard on 16 carries to go along with four touchdowns.

Wow, this kid has some serious stats, hope he has the grades and attracts enough attention to come to tOSU. Is it too early for any other comparisons besides Hall? Haven't been able to look at the film yet, but does he also remind some of Pead who's at UC now? Or any other scatback types?
