Detroit Loyola (Mich.) sophomore DE Malik McDowell verbally offered by #OhioState just now: http://t.co/UfgnAArc

more of a DT/DE than an OT/DE imo. Definitely see him playing defense. Heavy Michigan lean, will visit for the Spring game and there is a decent chance he is their first commit for the 2014 class.

stowfan 03-29-2012 03:32 PM

Not surprised with that news.

Edit: He didn't have a commitable offer anyway :D

When McDowell burst onto the scene early last month, Dave Berk of Scout said he looked like a "taller, younger Adolphus Washington." After that, one of the MSU guys over at Spartan Tailgate said McDowell was "a combination of William Gholston and Lawrence Thomas."

So...yeah, the hype is already reaching atmospheric levels.

No way is he a heavy Michigan lean. I think he will decide much later in the process, but you gotta think Michigan has the edge early.

I read an article that he grew up as a big Michigan fan, and he is wearing a pair of Michigan shorts in the video above. Still though, anything can happen when a prospect has offers from big name programs during his Sophomore year of high school.

Everything I've seen so far points to an eventual commitment to Michigan. Might be a while though.

Nope, no one has worn Michigan shorts before and not committed to Michigan.

Which are higher: Atmospheric or Astronomic levels?

Detroit (Mich.) defensive lineman Malik McDowell was one of the most impressive players during the linemen one-on-ones and you can see why plenty of schools will be taking a close look at him during the May evaluation period. The 6-foot-6 interior presence already claims offers from Ohio State, Michigan and Syracuse and is no doubt ticketed for plenty more based on his performance. McDowell was named a top d-line performer and said he'll be in attendance for Michigan and Michigan State's spring games.

Some players casually grow up rooting for a particular school, but that school doesn't necessarily take precedent once the recruiting process begins. It appears that McDowell grew up a pretty hardcore Michigan fan, and still is one. His demeanor seems pretty similar to Chris Wormley, with a much more stable coaching situation in front of him than Wormley had.

Everything I read, he's just that. Some have already said and assume he'll commit this weekend.

This would be like someone saying that Cam Burrows was never a huge OSU lean.

Imposing, gifted youngster Malik McDowell in no hurry to pick college

Sam Webb

Concordia College in Ann Arbor played host to the Adidas Invitational Football Showcase last Saturday, and featured a number of the region's top prospects. The annual combine/camp even managed to draw a heralded recruit all the way from California, but still it stayed true to its primary roots as a vehicle to greater exposure for youngsters from Metro Detroit. Among those homegrown talents generating a great deal of buzz during the event was Detroit Loyola sophomore defensive lineman Malik McDowell.

At 6-6, 270 pounds, McDowell stood out as one of the most physically imposing athletes in attendance. That happens to be a distinction he earns almost every time he steps onto a football field.

"He first came on my radar after last summer's Toledo camp when everybody said the best lineman there was a freshman," said Scout.com Midwest regional manager Allen Trieu. "I went and saw him in person last season and witnessed what everyone was talking about. Later I saw him at the Elite Big Man Camp in Wixom, and then the Adidas Invitational in Ann Arbor last weekend. He was great at both ? probably more so in Wixom because he got more reps. He went up against some older guys who are committed to BCS schools like Steve Elmer (Notre Dame) and Jesse Chadwell (Illinois), and did well against each of them. Other than one or two reps, he really wasn't stopped all day."
