FriDAY'S BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP
Dunbar boys slam Talawanda

By the Dayton Daily News

Dunbar opened the Division II boys high school basketball sectional tournament at Springboro Friday night by slam-dunking Oxford Talawanda into submission, 101-43.

The Wolverines' 6-8 Mark Anderson got the sold-out crowd howling less that two minutes into the game with a baseline tomahawk dunk over two 6-foot-6 Talawanda players.

That started a surge that put Dunbar on a 14-0 run and a 31-10 first-quarter lead. Dunbar had 11 crowd-pleasing dunks as it improved to 19-2.

Daequan Cook had 26 points, 6-9 Aaron Pogue 19 points and eight rebounds and Anderson 13 points, five rebounds, five assists and five blocked shots. All played only three quarters.

Dunbar plays Hamilton Badin in the second round on Wednesday.

Top seeds missing players

By Mark Gokavi
Dayton Daily News

Fairmont's and Dunbar's boys basketball teams earned top seeds in the area tournaments for Division I and II, respectively. But you likely won't see some who were starters for much of the season.

Ben Eldred, a starter and second-leading scorer for the Firebirds, has not been in uniform the past several games. Fairmont coach Hank Bias said it's unlikely Eldred, a junior, will play again.

Senior Antoine Sain, a starter for Dunbar in last season's state semifinals, was not on the roster printed for the Scholastic Play-By-Play Classic in Cincinnati.

Dunbar overwhelms stall tactics of Badin

By the Dayton Daily News

Dunbar used the 3-point shot to spoil Hamilton Badin's hold-the-ball game plan Wednesday night in the Division II boys high school basketball sectional at Springboro.

The Wolverines won, 72-36, to improve their record to 20-2 before a packed house. Next up is the sectional final Friday night against Alter at 6 p.m.

Badin's stall tactics worked early in the game when it was 3-3 with under three minutes to play in the first quarter.

Dunbar's only points came on a basket and free throw from Mark Anderson. Badin made three-of-four free throws.

Norris Cole finally got the Wolves moving with back-to-back treys to make it 9-3. Daequan Cook hit a free throw and then bottomed out a three at the buzzer to make it 13-3 at the end of the quarter.

Cole added another trey a minute into the second quarter for a 16-5 game and the route was on.

Anderson, a 6-8 senior, took over in the third quarter, scoring 14 of his game-high 19 points, including a pair of slam dunks. Cole added 13 while Cook had 10, including a slam in the third quarter when he took the ball off the glass and jammed it, bringing down the house.

Dunbar takes out feisty Alter

Knights escape early hole, but Cook puts it away in final minutes

By Sean McClelland
Dayton Daily News

SPRINGBORO | You didn't expect Joe Petrocelli's team to fade meekly into the night, did you?

Alter High School rejected that offer Friday night despite trailing Dunbar, 30-11, midway through the second quarter of a Division II boys sectional final.

Call it a healthy scare for the favored Wolverines, who led by three early in the fourth quarter before heroics from McDonald's All-American Daequan Cook secured a district berth, 61-52.

"It was my time to take over," the Ohio State-bound Cook said after scoring 10 of his game-high 28 points in the opening minutes of the final period, shoving the lead back to 15.

"Daequan is just in another dimension," observed Petrocelli, whose team finished 12-10.

Midway through the first quarter, with Springboro High's 2,700-seat gym already swollen to capacity, the public-address announcer advised fans to "please squeeze together close."

Dunbar (21-2) was in the midst of a 17-0 run and threatening to end the suspense early. But it was 44-38 going to the fourth, and then Alter's 6-foot-8 senior center Danny Bruner (19 points) nailed a 3-pointer.

Cook, who earlier had been content to set up teammates such as Aaron Pogue (16 points) and Mark Anderson, took this as his cue to reach for his cape.

"Just put us on his back and carried us," Dunbar coach Peter Pullen marveled.

There was little celebrating in the winning locker room. Dunbar's focus remains on returning to state and winning it. That quest continues March 8 in UD Arena against Bellefontaine.

Bellfontaine is a good team at 16-7, but Dunbar is much more athletic and they will not have an answer for Cook or Pogue in my opinion. As far as some challengers in Division II.....

Willard is a very good team out of the NOL, they will be tough to beat. Akron SVSM has only lost one game, I believe they are ranked #1 in Division II. Also, Greenfield McClain with Dante Jackson are a very good team who play defense, should be interesting.

If Cook can get hot, he can carry them all the way to the Final Four.
