Big Red players share glory

Boys' basketball: Hughes 53, Taft 45

BY CAREY HOFFMAN | ENQUIRER CONTRIBUTOR

The poster held up from the stands by his cousins proclaimed "King Hayes."

Hughes junior guard Lonnie Hayes might be feeling like a king after the kind of weekend he enjoyed. But the real story behind the success he and his Big Red teammates are sharing is that several of them have the talent to ascend to the throne, but none of them feels the need to claim it all for his own.

Hughes, the No. 5 team in the Enquirer Division I coaches' poll, became only the second team to hang a loss on Taft, the No. 2 team in the Divisions II-IV coaches' poll, knocking off the Senators 53-45 Saturday night in a game played at Fifth Third Arena at UC.

Hayes, who had 29 points Friday night in a victory over Withrow, followed with 25 in Saturday's low-scoring affair.

"This was a big win for us," said Hayes. "We had lost two games in a row before we came back this week with wins over Woodward, Withrow and now Taft. We're playing together, and we got back to that and playing defense now."

Hayes was scoring about 19 points a game coming into the weekend, third on a team that features Division I prospects in senior guard Adrion Graves (a Xavier signee) and 6-foot-8 sophomore center Yancey Gates.

"Everyone talks about Adrion Graves, but the thing is he doesn't take bad shots," Taft coach Mark Mitchell said.

"They're a team that's happy letting role players get things done, and then they have Lonnie Hayes, and I'll tell you that he's going to make some (college) recruiter look really good."

Taft was up 20-14 in the second quarter before Hayes scored 11 straight points for his team to stake Hughes to a 27-24 halftime lead. At the same time he was excelling, Taft went into a slump.

"Our shot selection is terrible," Mitchell said. "Right before half, we were on a run, and then we go 12 possessions where we only score four points and turn the ball over three times."

Some of that would be attributable to Hughes. With the 6-8 Gates, 6-4 Graves and lanky 6-6 junior forward Chris Taylor around the basket, good looks were hard to come by.

"We're really been focusing as a team on becoming a better defensive team," Hughes coach Greg Mills said.

"Tonight, with our man-to-man defense, we wanted to be sure to help and recover and keep (Taft) out of the paint."

Taft senior guard Heath White was the only Senator in double figures, finishing with 19. Graves added 12 for Hughes, which at 14-3 is believed to be sporting its best record since the late 1980s.

"This was a big win," Mills said. "There's a big rivalry with Taft, and the last couple of years they've beaten us, so this was important for our
confidence."

Hughes mourns loss of coach

Mills had heart attack playing pickup game

BY TOM GROESCHEN | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER

Greg Mills just had his best season as Hughes boys' varsity basketball coach, but that is not why the school will miss him so much.

Mills, 49, died unexpectedly of a heart attack Sunday. He was stricken while playing a game of pickup basketball at Hughes Center with one of his sons, and efforts to revive him failed. Mills had some history of heart trouble, friends said.

Mills guided Hughes to an 18-4 record and Cincinnati Division I sectional runner-up finish this season, his fifth as head coach. But, he was remembered more Monday for being a friend and counselor to all Hughes students.

"He was Mr. Hughes," said Jolinda Miller, Hughes athletic director. "The whole school is upset. It's a bigger loss than just the athletic department, because we'd normally go to him when we had a loss like this. He was our guidance counselor, and the kids loved him. ... When I heard about it, I dropped to the floor."

Adrion Graves, a Hughes senior who scored 20 points a game for the basketball team this season, said he and other Big Red players are in shock.

"He was very caring," Graves said. "He cared not only about the players, but all the students at Hughes. He helped me mature as a person."

Graves has signed with Xavier. He credited Mills for helping him get the scholarship.

Mills was employed as a school community coordinator at Hughes, which is located across the street from the University of Cincinnati on Clifton Avenue.

The Cincinnati Public School District had its crisis team of psychologists at Hughes on Monday to provide grief counseling to students and staff.

Reporters were asked to remain outside the building, where memorials accumulated outside Mills' office.

"The kids are leaving cards, pictures of Greg, flowers and notes," said Tony Dees, one of Mills' assistant coaches.

"Some of the kids are having a hard time just walking by his office, because Greg was like a father to many of them."

Mills had a 49-55 record in five seasons.

This season's team was led by Graves, junior Lonnie Hayes and sophomore Yancey Gates, as Hughes finished No. 4 in the Enquirer Division I coaches' poll.

Mills played high school basketball at Woodward, and later played at Northern Kentucky University. He was an assistant coach at Woodward and Western Hills before becoming Hughes head coach.

Lannis Timmons, now head coach at Woodward, had Mills on his staff when Timmons was coach at Western Hills. That included the 2000-01 Western Hills team that reached the Division I regional finals.

Mills had a heart attack during that season, Timmons said.

"Greg was a great guy, and he'd always have a good one-liner for you," Timmons said. "He told me this year when they lost once, 'Hey T, my players went on strike. They just didn't tell me.' Then he laughed, because he could always laugh at himself."

Hughes was scheduled to play season openers Monday in both baseball and softball, but the games were postponed because of Mills' death.

A funeral will be held today at 12:30 p.m. at the Islamic Center of Cincinnati, 3668 Clifton Ave. Burial will follow at Spring Grove Cemetery.

A memorial service will be held at Hughes on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the auditorium. The public is invited.

Mills was married with children, but Cincinnati Public Schools spokesperson Janet Walsh said the list of survivors is incomplete.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made to the Hughes Center Scholarship Fund, 2515 Clifton Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45219.

Hughes hires hoops coach

BY TOM GROESCHEN | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER

Hughes has hired Eddie Dreyer as boys' basketball coach, replacing the late Greg Mills.

Mills, 49, died of a heart attack in March after leading Hughes to an 18-4 record last season.

Dreyer spent last season as an assistant coach at the College of Mount St. Joseph. A 2003 Mount graduate, he also was serving as the school's men's tennis coach.

Before coming to the Mount, Dreyer was an assistant basketball coach for two years at Defiance College.

Dreyer is a graduate of McNicholas High School and played basketball for four years at the Mount (1998-2002).

He also has high school coaching experience in baseball at Georgetown and basketball at Williamsburg. He will teach math at Hughes.

Rusty Berner was named new head coach at Hughes towards the end of the first week of May. He formerly held the junior varsity coaching position at Parkway High School in Rockford, Ohio, in his first season as coach. He played his HS ball at Milton Union HS in West Milton, OH, starting for 4 years, and then collegiately at Capital. Congratulations to Coach Berner.
