North College Hill (Cincinnati) (8-0)

The high-flying Trojans had a good week with three lopsided victories -- two of them in California. But first they gained revenge for their only defeat last season by beating Cincinnati St. Xavier before a crowd of 3,500, which included Kentucky coach Tubby Smith. The Trojans shot a sizzling 70 percent from the field. Junior superstars Bill Walker and O.J. Mayo led the way with 28 and 26 points, respectively.

The 6-6, 225-pound Walker, who never stops attacking the basket, had six dunks. Out west, Walker had 34 points and 15 rebounds, while Mayo contributed 30 points in a win over Harvard-Westlake. Mayo had 29 points and Walker added 25 points and 12 rebounds in a rout of Compton Dominguez.

Last week: Routed Cincinnati St. Xavier, 87-49, Harvard-Westlake (Calif.), 89-62, and Compton Dominguez (Calif.), 91-57.

Late NCH run buries Lancers
La Salle kept the game close through first half

crowd of more than 8,600 packed Fifth Third Arena on Thursday to see North College Hill juniors O.J. Mayo, Bill Walker and Keenan Ellis dazzle and dunk on the La Salle Lancers.

The Trojans, who collected six dunks in the game, didn't disappoint the crowd.

Neither did the Lancers, who provided NCH with a stiff challenge for three quarters.

The Trojans, ranked No. 1 in the Enquirer Divisions II-VI area poll and No. 5 nationally by USA Today, got 23 points from Mayo and defeated La Salle, 78-61, in the second game of the Hoops on the Hill doubleheader played at Fifth Third Arena.

Walker added 14 points and 8 rebounds for NCH, which improved to 9-0.

La Salle (6-3), ranked fourth in the Enquirer Division I poll, was led by Bobby Austin, who scored 23 points. Tony Schmidt added 13 points for La Salle.
The Lancers out-rebounded the Trojans 38-37.

"We didn't come to play," said NCH head coach Jamie Mahaffey. "I think it's a matter of us not being focused. But, I thought La Salle played well. They gave a championship effort."

LaSalle, which trailed by only five points at halftime, sent a message to the Trojans early when Daniel McElroy blocked Walker's shot just seconds into the game.

The Lancers managed to stay close but the Trojans' superior size and quickness helped them pull away late in the second half.

"La Salle gave a great effort," said Mayo. "But, obviously we gave a very marginal effort. We definitely can play better."

La Salle's only losses this season have been to Lakota West and St. Xavier, the top two teams in the Enquirer Division I area poll.

"I couldn't be more proud," said Lancers head coach Dan Fleming. "Obviously (NCH) is a very talented team. But, our kids gave every ounce of effort."

NCH edges McKinley in battle of Ohio powers

By Tom Groeschen
Enquirer staff writer

COLUMBUS - Keenan Ellis swished a 15-foot jump shot at the buzzer to give North College Hill a thrilling, 69-67 victory over Canton McKinley Saturday night, in a marquee matchup of two nationally ranked boys' basketball teams.

Ellis, the Trojans' slender, 6-foot-11 junior center, scored off an assist from junior guard O.J. Mayo. Mayo streaked downcourt with the ball, reached the top of the foul circle, then snapped off a pass to Ellis on the left wing. Ellis stroked a line-drive jumper as the final horn sounded at Ohio State's Value City Arena, and Trojans players sprinted onto the court and gleefully mobbed their hero.

"I felt if I got the final shot, I would hit it," said a grinning Ellis, who said it was the first game-winning shot of his career. "O.J. made a great play to get it to me."

NCH (11-0) is ranked No. 5 nationally by USA Today. McKinley (8-2) is No. 16.

McKinley's only other loss was 51-50 to USA Today's No. 2-ranked team, Oak Hill Academy (Va.), in early December.

"Canton McKinley is good, but I feel like we're the best team in the state," Ellis said.

NCH is the defending Division III state champion, while McKinley is the reigning Division I champion.

The estimated crowd of 8,000 included former University of Cincinnati coach Bob Huggins. The game was the sixth of seven g
