BOYS BASKETBALL#10 SVSM 84#3 ST. EDWARD 74

<H1 class=red>Surprise party

Saturday, December 17, 2005 Eddie Dwyer

Plain Dealer Reporter
Marcus Johnson won't soon forget his 18th birthday.

For that matter, neither will the rest of the Fighting Irish.

St. Vincent-St. Mary, trailing by seven points entering the fourth quarter, picked up its defensive pressure and stunned St. Edward, 84-74, Friday night in a nonleague boys basketball game at the Eagles Nest.

St. Vincent-St. Mary, ranked 10th in The Plain Dealer's Top 25 poll, took control with a 17-0 run in the final eight minutes and improved to 3-1.

Third-ranked St. Edward, which couldn't overcome SVSM's ball pressure and clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch, slipped to 2-1.

"I was in foul trouble," said Johnson, who went to the bench after picking up his fourth foul with 52 seconds remaining in the third quarter. "But we needed to get some stops, and my teammates worked hard for that. And our pressure finally came through."

Did it ever.

The 6-3 Johnson, a University of Dayton recruit, returned to the court with just over seven minutes left and wasted no time in igniting the 17-0 run.
Johnson, who finished with a game-high 26 points, converted a steal into a soft jumper, made another steal and went strong to the basket for two more of his team's 40 fourth-quarter points.

Forcing St. Edward into turnovers and preventing the Eagles from getting into their halfcourt offense, the Fighting Irish rode two free throws by junior guard Gregory Preer, a layup by senior guard Brian Glasper, a 3-pointer by Preer, a four-point play by senior guard Patrick Nygaard and two free throws by Preer to a 66-54 lead with 5:26 left.

"They were just killing us early on with that high-low stuff," SVSM coach Dru Joyce said. "They are so big, and they run it well. So I made a decision to go small [with the lineup] and do what we do best. And that's pressure it, trap and create a little havoc."

St. Edward, which got 25 points from its multitalented sophomore post Delvon Roe, cut the deficit to six points with 30.4 seconds to go.

Johnson's teammates refused to allow the Eagles to spoil their go-to player's birthday as Glasper, who scored 19 points and was 10-of-11 from the free-throw line, sealed the deal with clutch free throws.

"[In] situations tonight, when [St. Vincent-St. Mary] was going on that run, I think at any time I could have called a timeout," St. Edward coach Eric Flannery said. "There's no question, when you look back, I should have. But one of the reasons I didn't is that I want to test that toughness of our players and see if guys are willing to step up."

Roe was held to 8 points in the loss....

Quote:
Ridgeway (Tenn.) 52, St. Edward (Ohio) 49

By Richard Griffis

The Sun News

Star of the game | Ridgeway's Ernest Fields was nearly perfect, scoring 18 points on 8-of-9 shooting. Fields, who also collected six rebounds and four blocks, sparked the Roadrunners with several highlight-reel dunks.

Turning point | St. Edward erased a nine-point deficit with a 14-2 run that handed the Eagles a 46-43 lead with 4:10 left. However, Ridgeway went to a pressure defense, turning several turnovers into free throws and a key jumper from Dasmine Cathey that proved enough for the win.

Game summary | St. Edward got a perfect effort from Jeff Aerni, who finished with 14 points and was 4-for-4 on three-pointers. He keyed the Eagles' late run with two late three-pointers. Reid Anderson pulled the Eagles to within one at 50-49 with 15 seconds, but after two Ridgeway free throws he saw his off-balance three-pointer rim out in the games dying seconds. Fields was the only Ridgeway player in double figures, but the Roadrunners forced 23 turnovers that offset their 40 percent shooting effort. St. Edward was hampered by Delvon Roe's 4-for-12 effort from the free-throw line. He was the only Eagle to attempt a free throw.

Quoting Ridgeway coach Wesley Henning | "We are a team that likes to press, but we were really concerned with their No. 5 (Aerni), especially when they spread the floor for him. But we were counting on pressuring them and it worked out for us."

Quoting St. Edward coach Eric Flannery | "We've had trouble breaking the press and that came to haunt us down the stretch tonight. Our kids did a great job of not giving up and getting back in the game, but we went back to doing some mindless mistakes we have in the past."

Mater Dei (Calif.) 86, St. Edward (Ohio) 71

By Josh Hoke

The Sun News

Star of the game | Mater Dei had a balanced effort with four players in double digits, but Taylor King was again the leader of the charge. The junior scored 32 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.

Turning point | The Monarchs led by four at halftime and increased the lead with small spurts throughout the second half. St. Edward kept the deficit around 10 points all game but rarely got much closer in the second half.

Game summary | Kamyron Brown had 17 points and seven assists and Danny Campbell (13) and Alex Jacobson (10) also scored in double digits for Mater Dei. St. Edward also had four players in double figures, led by Delvon Roe and Lewis Nne who each had 15. The scrappy Eagles hit enough second-half jumpers to stay within striking range, but couldn't overcome Mater Dei's 64-percent shooting effort in the second half.

Quoting Mater Dei coach Gary McKnight | "If you come to the Beach Ball and win three games you have to be very pleased. We ended this tournament with two very nice wins. I thought Rufus King was as good as any team in the tournament and [St. Edward] was a great, great team."

Quoting St. Edward coach Eric Flannery | "Every time we made a run to get it to six or seven, we just couldn't get a stop. They've got some great offensive players and they can hurt you inside and outside. That's what good teams do."

<H1 class=red>Eagles a blur to Wildcats

Eddie Dwyer

Plain Dealer Reporter

When you look at the box score of Fri day night's St. Edward- St. Ignatius basketball game, Matt Salay's point total isn't going to overwhelm you.

But no one played a more significant role than the Eagles' 6-3 junior guard.

St. Edward, with Salay setting the tempo with 11 first-half points, wore down its longtime rival, 77-64, in front of a capacity crowd of more than 2,000 at the Eagles Nest.

"The bottom line is we were going to take away Delvon," said St. Ignatius coach Brian Becker, referring to St. Edward's gifted sophomore post Delvon Roe. "And in the first half, we hold Delvon to seven points. But they come out and hit 3-balls. Give credit to Salay."

With the Wildcats' defense focusing on the 6-8 Roe, Salay came off the bench in the first quarter and ignited the Eagles' perimeter game.

On the strength of two 3-pointers and a putback by Salay, St. Edward moved to an eight point lead after the first eight minutes and led, 32-22, at halftime. The Eagles hit six of their seven 3-pointers in the first half, including three by Salay.

"I felt good before the game," Salay said of his early heroics. "My teammates were helping me by penetrating and dishing [the ball] out. And I was getting shots.

"We had to make them commit to [the perimeter shooters], because if we don't make shots, then Delvon's not going to get open.

"We're going to work inside-out. That's what we do."

What Salay and Co. do definitely opened up St. Edward's inside game as Roe and 6-10 junior center Scott Moviel began to make their presence felt in the second half.

Roe scored 13 of his team-high 20 points in the final 16 minutes and Moviel scored all 10 of his points in the second half as the Eagles, ranked eighth in The Plain Dealer's Top 25 poll, improved to 7-4.

Coach Eric Flannery's inside-outside game, combined with some clutch free-throw shooting by junior forward Kyle Hubbard and sophomore guard Frankie Dobbs, offset a 34-point performance by St. Ignatius' standout senior guard Rudy Kirbus. The 6-4 Kirbus scored 22 in the second half, including three 3-pointers, and finished with a 13-for-15 effort from the free-throw line.

Hubbard and Dobbs were a combined 13-of-14 from the line.

"Down the road, we're going to be a good basketball team," Becker said after his 15th-ranked Wildcats slipped to 4-5.
