Ok my thoughts.

Oden will start from day one. He is that good. His defensive presence is amazing. Even against Pouge who is 6'8'' he couldnt get a shot off without it being blocked. The shot blocking ability reminds me of Ken Johnson when he was here. The kid almost had a triple double in a high school game.

The only thing he needs to work on is passing out of double teams. He had a couple careless passes, but that can be expected when he has 8 hands reaching for the ball everytime he touches it.

I was real impressed with his touch from the free throw line. 9-10. That is really impressive from a big guy, especially since he will go to the line often.

He also doesnt get into foul trouble, which is a good thing for a big man.

Conley just let the game go in the first half, but in the second half when Dunbar came back and cut it to 3 he really took control, he got the offense in sync, he knocked down a big three and he led the break really well. I am really impressed with his ability to be able to lead a team, and just be a good pg, and he can shoot it when need be. Very solid.

Daquen was the one that really impressed me. In limited action, he showed that he has a sweet stroke, he can take you off the dribble, he can pull up and shoot it, put it off the glass, and he can attack the rim. I was really impressed with his quickness. I know the guys for North are not on his level in terms of quicks, but it seemed like they were in slow motion, besides when Conley was on him.

I see Cook and Conley as the two back up guards next year behind Butler, Lewis, and Mayes.

Anyways it was a great showing, and it was awesome for us to get all the pub we got. Really exciting things happening here in Columbus.

I think butler starts over conley, but I think it's gonna be interesting to see Cook vs. Lewis. Hopefully Ron develops into a dominant force by then and you are right.

No way Cook starts over Lewis. If he starts over anyone it is going to be Mayes. Lewis is the second best player on the team this year, and will be fighting Oden for that title next year. Either way the talent on this team is going to be remarkable.

I wish I had a chance to see Lighty b/c it will be interesting to see who gets more pt next year between the 3 guards coming off the bench as they will all be freshmen unless of course Cook starts. I think that could be a reason why cook or Lighty could start over Mayes, just to bring experience off the bench.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
Two OSU recruits OK after suffering injuries
Saturday, December 10, 2005
Rob Oller
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

INDIANAPOLIS — The Ohio State men’s basketball team saw its future flash horrifyingly before its eyes.

No, it wasn’t the NCAA infractions hearing downtown that made OSU cringe, but injuries to top recruits Greg Oden and Daequan Cook that occurred Thursday night in a nationally televised high-school game.

The game, played about four miles from where the NCAA met yesterday with Ohio State officials to discuss violations in the men’s basketball program, featured Oden and Indianapolis Lawrence North against Cook and Dayton Dunbar. North won, 69-54. Recruit Mike Conley Jr. also played for North.

With 2:32 left in the second quarter, Cook took an inadvertent elbow to the face while fighting Oden for a rebound. He walked off the court and did not return. He was taken to St. Vincent Hospital, where doctors determined he had suffered a mild concussion.

"I feel all right. I just have a light headache," Cook said yesterday. "I’m a little dizzy, but they said I can play again (today). But I don’t know if my mom will let me."

"He’s all right. He’s a tough kid," said Ohio State coach Thad Matta, who participated in the NCAA hearing.

Cook’s summer league coach, Al Powell, said the shooting guard was scheduled to undergo a precautionary CT scan.

"But he knows who the President is, and that Thad Matta is the head coach of Ohio State," Powell said, chuckling.

Oden, meanwhile, made a hospital visit of his own — to receive stitches in his lower lip — after his chin came down on the head of a Dunbar player in the second half. Oden, a 7-foot senior, had 23 points, 17 rebounds and nine blocked shots.

Cook scored 11 before leaving. Conley, a point guard who played with a stomach virus, had 13 points, seven rebounds, five steals and three assists. Oden, Cook and Conley played together most of the past five years on a summer team.

Thursday's high school basketball game between Lawrence North and Dayton (Ohio) Dunbar on ESPN2 received a 0.5 national rating, meaning about 477,000 households tuned in, according to ESPN.

That's the same rating received for the Wildcats' game last December against Poplar Bluff (Mo.) on the cable sports network.
