Talk about a way to create even more excitement for that weekend for texas fans... someone knows what they are doing...

Tyler Lee to play Colerain, Ohio in 2005
by Chris Parry
Tyler Morning Telegraph

Robert E. Lee should change its motto to "Defender of Texas" because that is what the Red Raiders will be doing next season in non-district.

It will be Texas vs. Florida Aug. 27 at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium. Two weeks later, it's Texas vs. Ohio.

In both games, Robert E. Lee will be representing the Lone Star State.

The Red Raiders' first out-of-state clash is confirmed with Lee taking on Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade Madonna in the finale of the East Texas Football Classic.

In the second out-of-state game, Lee will be going on the road to battle Colerain High School from Cincinnati, Ohio. This game is tentatively scheduled for Sept. 10 in Columbus, Ohio, but as of press time Wednesday, Tyler Independent School District officials were waiting for a signed contract, allowing the Red Raiders and Colerain to play.

"If this comes to fruition, I think it will be a phenomenal experience for the athletes and the community," said Cody Cunningham, TISD director of communications and public relations. "And all of the expenses associated with Robert E. Lee's participation would be funded by an outside marketing group.

"We hope to provide all of the details as soon as we have the contract finalized, which I expect to be Thursday."

REL-Colerain A Matchup

Of Defending State Champions

Lee won its first-ever state championship last season by defeating Spring Westfield 28-21 in the 5A Division I championship game.

Colerain finished 15-0 last season and won the District 1 Ohio Championship, defeating teams by an average of 40 points. The Cardinals ended as the No. 3 team in the nation, according to the national prep poll, and were No. 5 according to USA Today.

Colerain is coached by Kerry Coombs, named Co-Coach of the Year in District 1. The Cardinals have posted consecutive 10-0 regular seasons in 2003 and 2004.

Last season, Colerain totaled over 5,500 yards of offense, nearly all of that on the ground. The Cardinals averaged just 38.2 yards passing while rushing for nearly 430 yards per game. In the District 1 Championship, Colerain blasted Canton McKinley 50-10, rushing for 463 yards and passing for 26 yards.

Defensively, Colerain gave up two touchdowns or more only three times, defeating Princeton (45-12), Fairfield (56-14) and Lakota West (69-20).

Lee-Chaminade Madonna

Highlight ET Classic

Chaminade Madonna preparatory school is 3A, but competes against 6A/5A schools. The Lions captured the 3A state championship in 2003, and were named the best high school football team in Florida while finishing with a No. 15 national ranking.

Last season, Chaminade Madonna began the season 10-0 before falling to Immokolee in the 3A state semifinals.

Lee head coach Mike Owens said Dave Stephenson of TITUS Sports Marketing deserves the credit for putting this game together.

"This was done because of the East Texas Classic, and Dave (Stephenson) is the one who finds the teams and sets the schedule," Owens said.

Chaminade has posted 11 wins or more in all five seasons under head coach Mark Guandolo. The Lions have won five consecutive district championships, been a state runner-up (2002), state semifinalist (2004) and four-time regional finalist. Since 2001, Chaminade has had 40 players sign college scholarships, 12 of them Division I and 22 Division I-AA.

Owens said he and Guandolo have not been in contact yet.

"I haven't called him because there was no reason to until now, but I am sure we are going to trade film or something," Owens said. "I do know they are a quality program. It's a chance for programs from different states to play one another and maybe learn something from one another."

It should be a great opportunity for all Buckeye fans to come out and see Connor Smith and Cobrani Mixon play for Colerain and represent Ohio H.S. football.

Hope to see a lot of Scarlet and Gray in Crew that night...I'll be looking for ya!

Colraine graduated a ton of talent that had played together for three years. I don't think they'll be as tough this year as they were last.

Someone from Texas clear this up for me please; Georgia, Alabama and Texas allow 19 year olds to play. Ohio, to the best of my knowledge, does not. (It cost Colraine a shot at State one year when OHSAA discovered they had used a 19 year old. the kid didn't start, played very little and had little or no impact on their games.)

For starters, its 'COLERAIN'...

secondly...the defense returns Cobrani Mixon, Micheal Schiedt, Tyler Moeller, Eugene Lemmons and Calvin Dixon and big time D1 recruite (he is a junior to be) Eugene Clifford.

the offense returns Eric Ornella, Connor Smith, Brandon Wyatt, Kyle Lumpkin, Rico Booker and Terrance Schearer.

That is 12 starters returning...Colerain only had 15 returning starters last season.

of that group...Mixon, Moeller, Clifford, Ornella, Smith and Schearer are division 1 college recruits.

Don't count Colerain out. They will not 'dominate' the way they did last year in terms of suffocating defense...but when you score 49 points a game, its ok to give up 17.

Keep your ears open, if this is going to be the 9th me and a couple buddies would make the trip. You know that the Tejas fans that are in town a little early will, and we need to make sure that they don't overrun the Colerain stadium.

So when is this undercard matchup supposed to be taking place? Early in the day I hope, so I can go and still have time to tailgate.

For Immediate Release

Robert E. Lee Football to Face Ohio Powerhouse

Tyler, TX - The defending Class 5A, Div. I state champion Robert E. Lee Red Raiders have announced their 2005 varsity football schedule, which includes non-district games against state powers from both Florida and Ohio in the first three weeks of the season.

Robert E. Lee will kickoff defense of its first-ever state championship against Chaminade Madonna High School, which is located in Hollywood, Fla. Chaminade Madonna captured a Florida state championship in 2003 and was a state semifinalist in 2004 after starting its season at 10-0.

The meeting between Robert E. Lee and Chaminade Madonna will be among the four-game East Texas Football Classic, which returns to Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium for a second year to kickoff the high school football season.

Included in Robert E. Lee’s non-district schedule will also be a road game against Cincinnati Colerain, the reigning Ohio Div. I state champion which finished at 15-0 and No. 5 in USA Today’s final national rankings. The contest between Robert E. Lee and Cincinnati Colerain on September 9 will be played in Columbus, Ohio, the night before the University of Texas meets The Ohio State University. All expenses related to the team’s participation in the event will be funded by a sponsorship from Fahlgren Sports Marketing.

To allow Robert E. Lee to accept an invitation to play in Columbus, Lufkin High School agreed to shuffle its 2005 non-district schedule on September 9, from playing at Robert E. Lee to playing at Memorial High School in Port Arthur. Memorial High School participated in the 2004 East Texas Football Classic in Tyler and with the addition of Lufkin will also have a five-game home schedule.

Robert E. Lee’s remaining home schedule includes Euless Trinity, Longview and Mesquite Horn, while its road games will also include Waco, Rockwall, North Mesquite and Mesquite. The school’s annual meeting with John Tyler High School will be held on October 21.

Both the East Texas Football Classic and Robert E. Lee’s match-up in Ohio are being managed for the Tyler ISD by TITUS Sports Marketing, a sales and marketing consultant for the school district. Additional details on Robert E. Lee’s game against Cincinnati Colerain in Columbus will be announced in late April.
