KENTON — There were many key decisions made in Coldwater’s 45-0 shellacking of Bellville Clear Fork.
According to Coldwater head coach John Reed, the biggest decision was made at the coin toss.
“One of the most important things that happened tonight was that we won the toss,” Reed said. “We were able to defer, they take the ball, we were able to kick with the wind. We stop them, short punt, score. We stop them, short punt. It really made a big difference.”
Coldwater (12-0) will face Huron in a Division IV regional final Saturday at a location to be named today.
Coldwater scored on its first four possessions of the game. On defense, the Cavaliers did not allow Clear Fork to record a first down until the second quarter. For the game, the Colts managed just six first downs (two in first half).
“I’ve been there before,” Reed said. “We decided to defend the goal in the second half, rather than to take the ball. The wind was a major factor here tonight, but I don’t think it would have changed the outcome of the ballgame.
“Our kids came out to play. From the first man to the last man that came out there, they played hard.”
Coldwater jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, five minutes into the game on its first possession. Quarterback Steve Borger (five carries, 42 yards) ran in from five yards out, capping off a 9-play, 53-yard scoring drive.
Then after a three-and-out series by Clear Fork, Coldwater struck again as Borger connected with wide-out Justin Kahlig on the first play of the series for a 33-yard scoring strike. After Trevor Stromblad’s point-after, the Cavaliers owned a 14-0 lead.
The Coldwater defense stepped it up on Clear Fork’s next offensive series. Stromblad picked off a pass from Clear Fork quarterback Nik Weirch at the 40-yard line and returned it to the 8-yard line of the Colts. Running back Ross Homan later ran it in from four yards out to push the lead to 21-0.
Coldwater added one more score before the end of the first quarter as Borger (9-of-11, 148 yards) found Brady Geier open for a 13-yard pass play for another score. The Cavaliers led 28-0 at the end of the first quarter. Borger was 5-of-6 passing in the first quarter for 98 yards and two TD’s.
Homan (9 carries, 36 yards) scored his second touchdown of the game, in the second quarter to put the Cavs up 35-0 before the half. The Ohio State-bound Homan did not see any action on the offensive side of the football in the second half.
Reed said, “They (Clear Fork) ran the ball against everybody. They just never had to throw the ball, so they run it. But they just couldn’t run it (tonight). I think when you get this far along (playoffs), if you don’t have a ‘plan B,’ it’s difficult.”
Running back Tony Harlamert (10 rushes, 29 yards) went in from three yards out to push the lead out to 42-0 midway through the third quarter.
Then two minutes into the fourth quarter, Stromblad kicked a 23-yard field goal to round out the scoring.
Clear Fork head coach Rick Beans said, “They did a terrific job. That was the first time all year that we have been shut down, at least to that magnitude.
“And winning that coin-flip and being able to control that wind tonight was the key. Field position and controlling that stuff was key, but we have to respond, and we didn’t. They’re a terrific team.”
Coldwater held the Clear Fork potent running attack to 18 yards for the game. In the air, the Colts managed just 43 yards.
Beans added, “It’s going to take a whale of a team to beat them.
