T-Bolts win spot in playoffs By Eric Frantz For The Dayton Daily News TROY | A year after being shut out of the playoffs with a 9-1 record, Northmont can breathe easier. The T-Bolts are likely to be back in the postseason. Riding the arm of quarterback Clay Belton, Northmont posted a 35-14 victory at Troy on Friday night, which all but secured the fourth playoff appearance for T-Bolts in five years. The victory also wrapped up Northmont's fourth consecutive Greater Western Ohio Conference West Division title. "(Making the playoffs) is something this program expects to do every year," Northmont head coach Lance Schneider said. "Now we'll hopefully get a rematch with someone. I don't know who that is right now, but it's time to go home and burn the pencil to see who it's going to be." Whoever hosts Northmont (8-2, 5-0) in a Division I, Region 4 quarterfinal next week will no doubt have to contain Belton. The 6-foot-6 junior, who entered the game as the GWOC's top passer (2,119 yards and 21 TDs), completed 22-of-35 passes for 306 yards and five touchdowns. Belton's scores went to four different receivers with Justin Watkins catching two. "Clay has really matured," Schneider said. "He's gotten tougher as the season's gone on, and he's starting to see things and feel comfortable." Said Belton: "I came in this year taking over for Tyler (Horner), and I relied a lot on everyone else doing their job. I didn't want to come in and feel like I had to be the guy. I figured if I did my job and the receivers and line did theirs, we could get to the playoffs. Tonight wasn't about stats, it was about getting the victory." Troy (7-3, 3-2) had a chance to make the postseason, but thosedistant dreams faded with each Belton bomb. The Trojans fumbled on the game's second play, and Northmont recovered at the 32-yard line. Four plays later Belton hit Andy Wittman for a 16-yard touchdown. Belton added another TD to Ryan D'Arcy before hitting Justin Watkins with a backbreaking score 11 seconds before the half. The play followed another Troy fumble. "That hurt," Troy coach Steve Nolan said. "We were just trying to run the clock out and we fumbled. But we knew it was going to be a tough game. We knew we were outmatched at a couple of positions. We just don't have enough athletes to stay with all those receivers." Northmont scored on its first two possessions of the second half to pull away. The Trojans scored on TD passes from A.J. Bush to Daniel McCormick and T.J. White, while McCormick gained 182 yards on 28 carries. |
