I remember someone saying the Gahanna Lincoln Lions were going to win. But seriously, there have been some good teams at NHS since '96.
I am really happy for coach Scott Beery. Although he is a Golden Gale (yuck ).He was my favorite coach in the program. Class act all the way. Last edited by BUCKYLE; 02-04-2007 at 04:01 AM. |

The olden days at Nerk
I'm glad to see my alma mater doing well. Takes me back to 1956 when I was a senior. OSU & NFL great Jim Tyrer was the team captain and star tackle. (We had grown up together a couple short blocks apart and used to play sandlot football together two doors from my house.)
Newark won the Central Ohio League (COL) that year, beating Marietta in the final game at White Field. Joe Carlo was the head coach...great guy. I was in my fifth year as equipment manager, probably the only five year equipment manager in school history. (No, I didn't retake a year for grades What is memorable to me is that Tyrer was already recognized as an all-Ohio and there was a guy from Marietta with similar credentials. He was a lineman, first name Bill, but I can't remember his last...I want to say Blasingame, but not sure. Tyrer was a huge, tough guy on the field but a fairly mild mannered personality...class president, etc. But he and Bill got into a tangle early in the game with punches thrown and both got tossed. I remember him coming sadly off the field and Carlo saying to him "I TOLD you not to retaliate if that happened." He sat forlornly on the bench as the game progressed, tears streaming down his face. Nerk won without him, but I'm sure he looked back on that game with sadness the rest of his life. There were no playoffs then, so the league championship was it. Had a lot of good times traveling with the team to various sites. Go Bucks! |
