I have no doubt that this game has been terrific the last few years, but I think what was intended was something that met the follwing conditions:

1. Game played regularly as a part of the season schedule (ie no playoff rivalry)

2. Should be something approaching 30 - 40 years duration.

3. Should be a game that attracts outside interests...eg. Elder - West High has been played since the 1920's, but has long since ceased to be an "important game."

4. Should be a fairly even contest, ie no 22 - 8 - 2 series (see #3)

5. Should be a game that transcends other big games, ie, through most of the 50s and 60s the Troy - Piqua game was secondary to the Troy - Fairmont game, Moeller - Princeton has yielded in importance to St. X -Colerain.

Massilon - Canton McKinley meets that test. St Iggys and St Eds, good as both teams have been, fails to meet the standard.

I would have to vote for Massillon Washington/Canton McKinley. Growing up in Florida, I still heard that score on occassion.

Our schools at the time weren't big football schools. We had to admire rivalries from elsewhere.

It used to be always on Thanksgiving Day and you planned your meal around it. That ended in 1944 in Piqua with a Troy win. It was still the last gmae until 1949 when it moved in rotation with other Miami Valley League games. It was overshadowed by Troy-Fairmont briefly as those two staged a BATTLE FOR SUPREMECY in the MVL (1955-60) as the two won the league championship every year (Troy 4 times: Fairmont 2). After that the Troy-Piqua became no #1, again. Between 1968-1981 It became the opening game as both teams were member of a ten team league.( Troy in the Western Ohio League; Piqua in the now defunct Miami Central Conference It made the season for both teams with a opening win over their arch-rival. Troy won 11 of those 14 matchesl In 1982 they became members of the Greater Miami Valley Conference (Now the Greater Western Ohio Conference) Piqua has won the last two,It is our turn now!

Nope!!

Oldest = Age as in # of years. McKinley/Massillon have been playing since
1894 - Troy/Piqua since 1899 that makes the Pups/Tigers game 5 years
OLDER. If I were you guys I'd sed the "T's" back and get 'em reprinted
"Ohio's Most Played".

Now - given your Troy/Piqua rivalry is a great one and is #1 in the State of Ohio for number of games played!

I lived in Piqua up until June 2005 (When I finished 7th grade), and by then I had only played one year in the Piqua-Troy rivalry in junior high. That game was the most intense I have ever played in (We won 12-8 on a goal line stand) and still is despite playing in numerous big games this year on Varsity here in North Carolina. I've seen numerous Piqua-Troy varsity games as well and the intensity is unmatched.
