Herbstreit '08 lures champs BY TOM GROESCHEN | TGROESCHEN@ENQUIRER.COM ![]() Seven-time Missouri state champion Rockhurst, four-time Indiana champion Warren Central and three-time Florida champ St. Thomas Aquinas are among teams verbally committed to the 2008 Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge high school football event. Jim Herbstreit, father of event founder Kirk Herbstreit and matchmaker for the games, said Wednesday that Cincinnati powers St. Xavier, Colerain, Elder and Moeller also tentatively have agreed to play in the September 2008 event. Details are being arranged. The event this year was held on Labor Day weekend at two venues, UC's Nippert Stadium and Canton's Fawcett Stadium. Cont... |

I wonder if there will be any protesters at the event because of what Herbie said about Pryor.

I don't know what Herbie said about Pryor (don't really care either), but I would hope that the good that Kirk does for Ohio High School football would be the focus of an event like this.

When are they going to extend this down to the smaller divisions? I don't mean to sound like a homer, but the MAC would love to compete with some small schools from other states. Just curious is it a money thing? Or is that taken care of by Herbie's backers.

I agree, but there are just as many if not more teams in Ohio who are better than Middletown, Lakota West, Grove City, Centerville, Wayne, and even Elder (recently). If Ohio sent their absolute best to the Herbie, than you wouldn't have seen nearly half of the teams that have been in it. It would be nice to see that happen, but scheduling is an issue. Then again, who thought in week 2 of the 06 season that Hilliard Davidson, who beat Philedelphia St. Joeseph in that year's Herbie, would go on to win the Division 1 state championship? Let's just be happy that we have an event like this here in our own backyard. Being an avid Warren Harding supporter, I would love to see them in it, BUT Howland will get their shot first, and I'll be rooting for them. No, they aren't one of the best programs in Ohio traditionally, but there have been teams in this event who are a LOT worse than they are. Just because Howland was good last year doesn't mean that they'll be strong again this year, but this is a huge test for their program. Woodland Hills is a solid program in PA, but they had an off year last year, similar to schools like Harding and Canton McKinley here in Ohio. Howland will have a nice chance to get a W for Ohio, unlike a couple of the huge mismatches that will reseult in a huge L for us. In fact, as much as I respect their programs, who knows if Massillon &/or McKinley have recovered from their bad years (last season & this offseason)? I hope so. FWIW, if northern Ohio was really able to send their best programs to the Herbie last year, you would have your pick out of Cleveland St. Ignatius, Canton McKinley, Massillon Washington, Warren Harding, Mentor, and Lakewood St. Edward. Three of those programs had rebuilding seasons last year, while another one underachieved miserably. In most seasons, it would be hard to bet against those programs against anybody, but last year that group would have been lucky to finish above .500 if all of them would have been in the Herbie (they would have sold out Fawcett or Paul Brown Staium easily though). Howland is kinda like a "darkhorse" in this year's event, but they should represent Ohio well. |
