Here is an article on Big Walnut's victory over Ben Buchanan and his Westerville Central Warhawks.

At the game, the announcer dubbed this game as a rivalry beginning like a battle for air superiority between the eagles and warhawks. They had some sort of trophy that the winner will keep for the year! This is pretty cool since Big Walnut is solo now that there are 2 Olentangy high schools and Central is the odd man out in Westerville.

Big Walnut traveled to Pataskala tonight to take on Watkins Memorial. Somewhat of a stalemate the first half but Big Nut came on in the 2nd. The offense, led by Ethan Wetzel, struggled most of the game with penalties, dropped passes, fumbles, you name it....but when Wetzel takes control, he can basically have his way with the option or QB sweep on every set of downs. Which he ended up turning to.

The defense also added a score when Wetzel ran an interception back for a TD and then got flagged after doing a flip in the endzone. The excitement got the best of him, but really that play was the Guillotine and choked the last bit of fight out of Watkins Memorial. Studlein had a great game indicative of the shutout.

Big Nut is a well balanced team and all the kids deserve credit.

Ethan Wetzel and the Eagles shut down McDougal and the Irish.

Ethan ran back the opening kickoff 100 yards for a TD. That set the tone for this game.

The opening Kickoff has not been run back for 100 yards since 1963 in any Ohio High School Football game!

Sunbury Big Walnut 21, Dublin Scioto 7: The Golden Eagles remained unbeaten with an impressive win over Dublin Scioto. BW quarterback Ethan Wetzel played a large part in the decision by completing 7-of-12 passes for 75 yards and TD and rushing 11 times for 33 yards. Wetzel also returned the opening kickoff 99 yards for a score.

I still say it was 99.75 yards which is 100 in my book

Big Walnut led by killer defense(Liberty had ZERO rushing yards). The score was closer than the actual game.

Edit: Watched the game on TV today and it was a good show for Big Nut.

Will Studlien and Crew had another outstanding game. A little sloppy at times but impressive to say the least.

The offense moved down the field with relative ease and the defense did a good job against their spread offense with the 5 or more wide outs at times. It was cool to see a totally different type of offense than all of our previous opponents.

Halftime: Franklin Heights band really sounded great.

Cory Wolfe scored three touchdowns and Ethan Wetzel passed for one touchdown and rushed for another as visiting Big Walnut (9-0, 4-0) beat Franklin Heights (4-5, 0-4) in the OCC Capital.

Wolfe scored on a 3-yard run and caught a 25-yard pass from Garrett Koehler as the Eagles took a 30-6 halftime lead. Wetzel also scored on a 4-yard run and threw a 12-yard TD pass to Derek Jones in the first half.

Mike Chandler threw for 156 yards and a touchdown and rushed for a TD for Franklin Heights.

The changing point was that Ethan Wetzel suffered a concussion in his TD run before the end of the first half as he didn't play the 2nd half.

EastSide-thanks for all the updates. Any idea whether the concussion will affect his play this weekend? Before I found out that he missed the second half (the likely reason that they lost), I figured losing the game would actually help them get more motivated for the playoffs. My senior year at Big Walnut we went undefeated during the regular season and then lost our playoff home opener to Beechcroft. Needless to say I don't want that to happen to this team.

Well I am just a fan but from what my kids tell me is that Wetzel suffered a mild concussion and didn't remember the play or the hit. He tried to shake it off but he just wasn't 100% to come back in the game. The back up QB(Garrett Koehler) is actually probably the one of the best back ups in the OCC and he did a terrific job coming in off the bench. He ran an excellent hurry up 2 minute offense and was one play from tying it up in the final seconds. Wetzel was missed more on defense. His aggressiveness on D would have definitely prevented that long run by the QB that gave New Albany the lead.

Wetzel is one tough kid. He will play and he will be as effective as he has ever been. He has post season experience, he knows the game better than anyone, and he is a winner. If for some reason Wetzel does not play, we should not miss a beat. This team is well rounded and deep. This is the year that Coach Wetzel has waited for.

I remember your team. You were awesome. It was a heartbreaker when Beechcroft, led by Ohio State recruit Sirjo Welch came in and took care of business as the #8 seed. It was just as devastating when Van Wert came in town as the #8 seed and burst our bubble on the opening kickoff. It was over from the start.

Big Walnut will overcome their #1 seed jinx this year. And it may be attributed to the final loss to New Albany but I think it is will be beause of this great class of atheletes that Big Nut has been blessed with.

I hope they shut down Rico Ross. That will be their key to victory in this one.

Disappointment!

For the second year in a row, The Golden Eagles watched an outright Ohio Capital Conference Capital Division football championship slip through their fingers.

New Albany (7-3, 3-2), clinging to slim OHSAA Playoff hopes, upset second state-ranked Big Walnut 24-17 to hand the 9-1, 4-1 Golden Eagles their first loss of the season Friday night at Golden Eagle Stadium. The loss, combined with Liberty’s 34-7 victory over Franklin Heights gave the 8-2, 4-1 Patriots a share of the Capital Division title.

Ironically, Big Walnut has shared the OCC Capital championship the last two years with teams they defeated during the regular season. In 2006, the Golden Eagles shared the title with Watkins Memorial, a team they defeated 24-14 during the regular season. This season, Big Walnut defeated Liberty 24-7.
