We had a real good team that year and were cruising to a big showdown with Coldwater before we ran into Cincy Wyoming who finally beat us, led by future OSU recruit Richard Hall, who was simply unstoppable that night (I want to say he went for about 250 yards or so, and we had a heck of a run defense). (Too bad Hall never got his grades in order, by the way.) I was also at that 2000 Ironton game (it actually technically occurred in 1999, I think; either way, Ironton always had our number) and it was an absolute meltdown. The moment Strayer went down, the game went south. That game was also indicative of the risk taking that Niswonger lives and dies by. It's been a while, but I seem to remember him going for it on something like 4th and 5 inside our own 25 with four or five minutes left in the game. We didn't get it, and that was all she wrote. But yea, we had a sizeable lead when Strayer went down and there was no reason to keep throwing the ball all over the place.

You bring up a good point with some of the passing camps VV used to participate in way back when. I remember going to a party down in Highlands, KY my senior year with some girls my buddies and I met on spring break. Who should we run into there but Jarred Lorenzen, the Round Mound of Touchdown. Talked to him for a while and when he found out I went to Valley View all he could do was talk about how impressed he'd been with our guys, who had almost knocked off Highlands in a camp the summer before.

And my sister, who was friends with Brock's sister, tells me his dad really does have a room with pictures on the wall of the bodies of all the guys he's taken out. He was the former business partner of Larry Flint, too, if I remember correctly. Guy's a character.
I remember watching the Wyoming VV 98 playoff game. I think they were two time defending state champs on a 30 something game winning streak. Hall was a hell of a player and if had gotten things in order book wise he would have been a good one for OSU. The Collins, I think there's a couple, were going down to Cincy to do speed camps. A couple other guys were way ahead of the curve on that too doing probably more offseason work than the rest of the SWBL put together. I think in 96, Keating's Senior Valley View played it's only two close SWBL games for probably the 90's. Oakwood played them tough and lost 14-11. Northridge with Mario Core, Doug Spear, Shawn Brightman, Nolan Jones and a really good senior class played them close too.

Yea, there was Kevin Collins and I forget the other kid's name. Both good guys and both fast as hell.

It was either during the '97 or '98 season, I think, that Eaton took VV to triple overtime when they had Tommy Jones, who was one of the top QBs in the Midwest and had the unfortunate bad luck of choosing Indiana for his college ball in the same year that a guy named Antoine Randel El ended up there. Looks like Jones is still playing for the Mississippi MudCats. Ha!!

Tommy Jones was impossible to tackle. We would try to tackle him and it wouldn't do anything and he'd just rifle a TD pass. I heard he got an offer from OSU but turned it down for early playing time at IU. Tried to confirm it on here but I guess it predates good recruiting info.

Dude was like 6-5, 230 in high school. In D-IV football, that's bigger than most teams' D-linemen. I wouldn't be surprised about him getting an OSU offer, b/c he had all the makings of a big time QB. The best high school QBs I ever saw in person were probably Ahmed Plummer, Jones, and Jason Turner from Versailles. I was probably most impressed with Turner, actually. I think he ended up playing baseball at Ohio State. If memory serves me right, he was supposed to be an incredible diver, too, and even played club soccer in the off season.

Great conversation, Dayton. Someone should cue up Springstein's Glory Days.

I was able to catch the game against Eastmoor. Like the article says.........speed kills. Touche' Hopkins is deadly with the ball in open space. And their QB........don't blink. If you do you'll miss the TD.

I saw some good stuff from Valley View, but this obviously was an over matched team. Good season Valley View, next season has already started, start hitting those weights. As for Eastmoor. They play Sheridan on Saturday, 7pm at DeSales

Well, Eastmoor is now in the state championship game and has rolled the entire way there, so I guess our blowout loss doesn't look quite as bad as it once did. . . .

Valley View 21, Dayton Dunbar 13. Well, it was a week one win. We'll take that.

Quote:
Valley View 21, Dunbar 13: Zach Cottingim snared a 23-yard scoring strike from Kyle Pohl and also bolted two yards for another score in leading the host Spartans. Joe Kelly added a 1-yard TD for the winners.
Jeremy Glenn to Roger Williamson was good for two long TD strikes for the Wolverines, covering 50 and 31 yards.

Valley View 37, Indian Hill 27. The Spartans have Indian Hills' number, having beaten them three years in a row now. Valley View scores 22 in the fourth quarter to stay undefeated.

It's been an up-and-down season for the Spartans, unfortunately marred by the same inconsistency that did them in at times last year. They currently stand at 5-2 and 6th in the D-IV, Region 16 computer point rankings.

http://www.joeeitel.com/hsfoot/2009region_16.html

2009 Valley View Spartans Results / Schedule

Their two losses are to what appear to be a very strong Lemon-Monroe team (6-1) and an unusually subpar Bellbrook team (1-6, but competitive in every game this season, aside from vs. Alter). Kyle Pohl, the standout Spartan QB, recently went down with what was (last I heard) diagnosed as a concussion, so, after a big, 9-7 win over Franklin on a last-second field goal (Prep football roundup: Late field goal lifts Valley View over Franklin), I'm not sure what his status will be against a suddenly-good Carlisle team this week (seriously, Carlisle is 6-1???). With Carlisle one spot ahead of Valley View in the computer rankings, a win would do wonders for those point totals before the Spartans wrap up the season with two tough games, first at Eaton (both Spartan losses have come on the road this year), and then, as usual, concluding the season against Brookville, this time within the friendly confines of Barker Field.

BIG win for the Spartans last night, as they down Carlisle 22-8.

Quote:
Despite having starting quarterback Kyle Pohl (concussion) and senior running back Joe Kelly (leg) on the sidelines, Valley View managed a come-from-behind 22-8 win over visiting Carlisle.

"This is a good win for us," a hoarse Valley View coach Jay Niswonger said. "We told the kids all week that we didn't have anybody hurt on special teams or on defense. Our kids really rose to the occasion tonight. This is a really big win for us. I bet Tiger would've smiled with this one. The Lonesome Polecat offense is alive and well in Germantown."

Ellison, a hall-of-fame coach at Middletown High, invented the Lonesome Polecat offense more than 60 years ago. It's a forerunner of the run-and-shoot with an unbalanced line to the left.
The Lonesome Polecat. First time I've heard of that, but it apparently did the trick. Hopefully the Spartans can get healthy by next weekend, because they have two tough games to conclude the season.

Quote:
"This win feels amazing. Especially when they had Jordan (Jacobs) and Adam (Emrick) over there. This feels really good to win this," Schenck added.

Both Jacobs and Emrick transferred to Carlisle from Valley View after last season.
Football players transferring from Valley View to Carlisle? That's crazy talk. Would you trade in your '68 Chevy Nova Super Sport for an '88 Chevy Nova? What's the world come to?

The Spartans dropped another one on the road last week, this time to a pretty good Eaton team that held off Valley View late for a 20-14 win. Eaton will win the SWBL this season as a result, though they may still miss the playoffs (it appears that if they beat Preble Shawnee tonight, they'll probably eek in).

This week the Spartans are at home, where they're yet to lose this season, to face off against Brookville. Currently, they're in 5th place in the D-IV, Region 16 computer point rankings. If they win tonight, they're in. If they lose, they'd need some help (and, frankly, if they lose, they probably shouldn't get in at 6-4--in terms of D-IV schedules, they played a tough one this season, but not that tough).

In general, the SWBL has been solid this season, but no team has really presented itself as what I would consider a contender for a long playoff run. Per the Dayton Daily News:

Quote:
Seven SWBL teams still have a postseason shot. The top eight per region advance.

Still alive in Division III, Region 12 are No. 4 Monroe, No. 9 Eaton and No. 10 Franklin.

The SWBL logjam in D-IV, Region 16 includes No. 5 Valley View, No. 6 Carlisle, No. 7 Milton-Union and No. 8 Waynesville.

Five SWBL teams qualified for the postseason in 2008: Brookville, Franklin, Oakwood, Valley View and Waynesville.
Pressure kick gives Eaton leg up in division

Valley View 38, Brookville 19.

Five players scored touchdowns for Valley View, which notched a Region 16 playoff spot with the win. The Spartans finish the year 7-3, Brookville 5-5.
The win means the Spartans finish 5th in the D-V, Region 16 computer rankings, and will have to play on the road (which they haven't done well this season) against what the record indicates is a very good 9-1 Kenton team that's only loss tis season was a close one on opening night to Coldwater.

Can anyone that's seen Kenton this season offer any insight?

The Spartans go down to Kenton in the first round of the D-IV playoffs, 46-27. After talking to family that was at the game, they suspect Kenton may be the only team in Region 16 that can challenge Alter. Last year the Spartans went down to eventual state runner-up Eastmoor in the first round. Tough draws these past two seasons, but next year should really be their year, given that we started many juniors at key positions this season. Nice season, Spartans.
