2014 Offense Discussion

Surely there must already be a thread for this? If so please merge. I'd like to know everyone's opinion on something. In general, how much of the offensive playbook remains the same this year and how much changes? With a less experienced line, better receivers, pivot players, etc. and the loss of Carlos I expect there to be several new wrinkles. Urban has more of his type players now, surely the offense will evolve to reflect that. I think we see about 1 new play/formation for every 5 plays, so an 20/80 ratio of old to new plays.

They need it badly. As for the skilled positions though, we have nothing to worry about there. The Buckeyes have them all over the place in spades.

It's basically a QB double power? Clemson even pulled a guard if I remember correctly. It gives you a 9-8 advantage in the run game and faking the speed sweep is very stressful on a defense.

But we can only put up those points IF Braxton has progressed and continues to progress as a passer. Using more of his reads and figuring out when to hand it off or keep it better in the run game. It all starts and ends with Braxton on offense. He can get those things in order then sky is absolutely the limit for this offense.

We will get better field possession with our return game IMO which will help the offense. IMO the defense will be much stouter and that will give the offense 3-4 more possessions in most games. I think the offense cracks 50 per game this year.

I think until the line gels, we are going to see quick hits to the perimeter and plenty of action in the run game...this OL is equipped to be very strong in run blocking from the very get-go. Mostly they will need to become cohesive and proficient in the pass protection and in picking up blitzes. Sure we will take an occasional shot here and there to keep the defense honest. My biggest concern is the OL keeping Braxton healthy early on and getting up to par by the time we face MSU...they lost some talent but their DL is still very, very good. And good point on the return game...with guys like Dontre, Samuel, Lattimore, etc. we could see some big returns.

2014 Season Preview: Scouting the Buckeye Offense

With so many proven ways to beat a defense on the ground, the Ohio State running game has proven incredibly difficult to stop. However, as Clemson showed in the Orange Bowl, the task is not impossible. The Tigers held the Buckeyes to 193 yards rushing, and a season-low average of 4.02 yards per carry. Specifically, the Tigers shut down Miller, only allowing him 35 yards rushing on 18 carries, by far his lowest output of the season. It's likely that the Tigers provided a template of how to shut down Miller ....

There's a lot of talk about Elliott and Samuel but I expect Rod Smith to have some Eddie George-like moments... it's now or never for him and he has the talent to make it now. Combined with Braxton's scrambling ability and Dunn and Ball as steady reserves, this could end up being the most potent group of ready-to-go rushers ever assembled at OSU. Theoretically that opens up the passing game more but even so, there's no game before Michigan State where we shouldn't be able to basically pound away. There should be no reason for Braxton bravado until that game and he should be in better shape than last year.

The good news is before then our offense gets a look at what MSU's defense can do against Oregon. The bad news is MSU's defense will have experience against Oregon... the closest thing there is to OSU's offense. The difference this year is that OSU has four different yet potent rushing options and more passing options on the edge and down the field. No other team on the schedule should even come close to matching up to the OSU offense. Combine all that with the improvements expected on defense and OSU should have a truly special season.

Seems like a good thread to revisit. Even in advance of MRI results the fact that an MRI is required from a non-contact injury suggests we need to look at our O sans-Miller.

Here is a nice quote from a few days ago:

"A source close to the program tells Eleven Warriors that while Barrett might lack the explosiveness of Terrelle Pryor and Braxton Miller, he's light years ahead of where those two were on the quarterback timeline when they were his age."

The loss of Miller would not make Wilson, Samuel, et al any slower.

The loss of Miller would not make Elliot or Smith any less explosive.

The loss of Miller would not make our new-found stable of speedy receivers any less fascinating. (After all, it is not like Miller has stretched the field consistently with his arm.)

Last year we had an incredible O with a suspect D and in the post season proved the old adage that good pitching stops good hitting.

This year I am terribly excited about our D. We shouldn't need to average 45+ per game to compete for the B1G or to make the playoffs. All we need is to be able to consistently move the ball and keep the D off the field for reasonable spates of time. QB aside we have as impressive a set of talented skill players on the offensive side as I can recall. I have every confidence Wariner will deliver a marketable line. Unless Meyer ruptured his vocal cords and his cerebellum we will take the pieces we have and put together a very nice attack.

Miller is as dynamic a runner as any to ever wear the S&G. No way Barrett gives us what a healthy Miller could deliver. But he may well give us all we need.

Every year since Urban got here we have seen a different offense.
First it was mostly Brax doing everything to win games.
Year 2 saw Hyde mature to a force to help carry the work load but the passing game was not there, yet. And the defense was suspect in pass defense.
Year 3 was supposed to be the year it all came together with a explosive offense and a solid defense.
Without Brax the offense takes a hit.
But how much?
The defense better be much better to help out the offense at the start.
But this is still potentially a very good TEAM.

It's always kinda fun to watch an offense attempt to gel when there's a new QB. Granted, sometimes the fun is watching Schlichter throw INTs until he's a Super Soph, or Bauserman make amazing completions to the C deck...but it's still a great ride. I'm looking forward to it.

Those throws to the c-deck were something else. Damn, never saw so much as a single wounded duck. They were missiles.
