Despite Bill Hancock‘s continued insistence to the contrary, the College Football Playoff has not yet claimed New Year’s Eve as its own. Go ask your non-diehard friends when the next semifinals are, and chances are they’ll tell you New Year’s Day. And why wouldn’t they? The Rose and Sugar bowls were on Jan. 1 this year, and that seemed to work out okay for everyone.

That changes in 2015.

Despite reported pressure from ESPN, the Playoff will indeed place its semifinals on Dec. 31 two out of every three years, beginning this New Year’s Eve.

Announced officially on Tuesday afternoon, behold your 2015-16 New Year’s viewing schedule:

So it's Orange and Rose this year? Those are the two stadiums hosting the Semi-Finals?

I liked it better when the vast bulk of the population lived East of the Mississippi and that drove the start times for sports events -then again, that was in the era of no more than two TV appearances a year for any team.

But starting on New Year's Eve? That's going to lead to marital discord in more than a few homes - like mine. Thank God for Tivo.

I could see doing this if January 2 was a Monday - Thursday, but with - Oh wait a minute, this is to avoid conflicts with the NFL.

PS Big Woof - the Rose Bowl opted out of the CFP CG.

The Rose Bowl will always be 5:00 eastern time on Jan. 1. The Rose Bowl has so much tradition spewing from its ass that it is allowed to do that. The Sugar Bowl, with ties to the SEC, will do whatever it takes to not be out-done by anyone else. "We insist that we're always on New Year's Day, too!" The rest of the country, not really giving two shits, consented to that. So that leaves 4 more bowls: Orange, Fiesta, Cotton, and Peach. Unless they overlap, they need to be played at different times. Some egghead chose 3 spots New Year's Eve and 3 on New Year's Day. Since there's no way to put 2 of those remaining bowls in 1 spot, those 2 bowl games will be on December 31. Unless and until the playoff games are Rose and Sugar again (2017 season), we'll have playoff games on New Year's Eve.

They should have done one of the following:
1. Switched playoff games to Jan. 1 or 2, instead of Dec. 31 or Jan. 1.
2. Put the Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl on off-setting years. So one year, you have the Peach and Rose Bowls, both on Jan. 1, the two Playoff games. The next, you have the Sugar and Fiesta, both on Jan. 1. The third year, you'd have Cotton and Orange, both on Dec. 31. Not the best plan, but better than getting to arguments with the women about whether to watch the final seconds of Georgia Tech kick a last-second field goal, en route to beating Notre Dame 41-3, or "Who the hell cares' Rockin' New Year's Eve". Sure, the latter has a prettier face to kiss, but the former has Notre Dame losing!

No what they should have done was: 1. Forced the NCAA to take charge of the CFP just as it does for every other sport. 2. Told the bowls to fuck off. 3. Put the playoff/NC games in three of four rotating sites - the LA Coliseum, Soldier Field, Meadowlands/Giants Stadium and either the Super Dome, Pro Player, or Jerry's World. Or as Nick Saban would say, "Make it an even playing ground for everybody."

Behold: the entire 2015-16 bowl schedule

Bowl scheduling announcements have trickled out a few at a time over the past few weeks and on Tuesday the Football Bowl Association combined them all into one handy sheet.

This year’s slate features 41 games, stretching from Dec. 19 to Jan. 11, from Honolulu to the Bronx, and from Boise to Nassau. Only one game – the brand new Arizona Bowl in Tucson – still lacks a kick time, and all but two, the brand-new Cure Bowl in Orlando and the Sun Bowl, will be televised on the ESPN family of networks.

That means 82 teams need to be "bowl-eligible", i.e., 6-6 or better. Not sure how that's going to be feasible with 128 teams, seeing if 82 teams are 6-6 or better, that means only 46 teams (or less) will have losing records.

Someone told me that if all "bowl eligible" teams are already taken, they can start picking from "bowl ineligible" teams. I don't know how reliable that was - that was just some guy at work who may or may not know what he's talking about. But my question is whether you need to take all of the 5-7 teams before you can pick 4-8 teams, etc., or if all "bowl ineligible" teams are open at that point. You can have a Michigan-like streak of 100 straight bowl games if there are enough bowl games.

Simply making a bowl is almost the equivalent to graduating from high school - it's the minimum expected accomplishment necessary to achieve in order to be considered a contributing member of society.

Sure, damn near everyone else is graduating going to a weak ass bowl game too, but lets go ahead and throw a huge ass party anyway.....

IIRC last year there were 3 or 4 teams in the SEC alone that were only eligible because of wins over FCS opponents.
But yea, it's just become absurd... it was out of control 10 years ago, but now it's ridiculous.

Kujo, you raise two issues here: 1. You fail to recognize that an SEC team with less than 7 wins would finish no worse than 2nd in any other Power Five conference. 2. Though the games are ridiculous during Bowl season, they do offer something to watch other than reality TV. Maybe, since those games draw so poorly, the networks could spread the re-runs out over the off season to ease the boredom.

I mean who remembers what happened in the Belk, Franklin - American Mortgage, Tax Slayer Bowl games? It would be just like first run for most of us. BB73 could set up a virtual betting window for those of us with certified Alzheimer's.

Hell of a deal.
