2015-16 Ohio State Quarterback Discussion

Maybe Baxton should move to H-back next year? Super wildcat? Super hback option pass?
I'm with you here. If JT continues pace or if he even improves then honestly I'd like to see this offense over a run heavy offense we have featured under Braxton. I'd hate to have to make that call if JT goes for 3500 yards with 35 tds if I were Urban.

Obviously it's early but if our offense continues to spread the ball around and we continue getting better how we can bench the guy is beyond me. There's more that goes into an offense other than running QB draws and counters. JT can do those things but will just get 5 instead of 15 which I believe is perfect. If JT continues throwing the ball this way though then no way is this even a question

While it's a tough call, for me it's a no-brainer especially if JT continues to improve at this pace. If he finishes the season with 3500yds and 35tds, JT Barrett should be the starter hands down next year. If I'm coach (and the rest of the team) I would be working with Braxton to get him healthy and ready for the combine. Now if Braxton does return (which I still think its a maybe) and figures into team's plans, I would include him in different looks like wildcats, pistols line him up at WR, H-Back and RB BUT my QB would be JT.

This is not a knock on Braxton and I think the world of Braxton with what he has done for TOSU but JT will have earned it the starting QB position with those numbers and his performance.

What pace do you guys see? I told my dad after the Cinci game that, if he were to give me a million dollars for guessing within 100 of how many passing yards JT had, I would have lost a million dollars. That was not a 300 yard passing performance. That was the Ezekiel Elliott/Offensive Line show, with JT as a supporting actor. It was also a terribad defense. Assuming no ill-effects from the injury, and assuming Braxton comes back to play QB, there's no way JT gets the nod over him unless JT gets A LOT better. That's not saying he's bad. But he's still running a training wheel offense, and he missed quite a few wide open guys last Saturday when things were getting tight.

I get the feeling that he is only allowed to throw deep when he's told it's OK for this specific play to go deep.....and he doesn't have the ability yet to read the defense and see that Dontre Wilson is streaking down the field with the closest defender 8 yards behind him. Otherwise, he's getting credit for passing yards on screens and that play where Dontre or Jalin Marshall run in front of him and he flicks it forward.

Those are two of the biggest issues, however. Will his arm ever be the same? Even if he does come back, it may be in his interest to switch positions -- he was in serious doubt to be drafted as a QB before this particular injury, and he was considered injury prone before being sidelined for a year as well. Being injury prone as a skill player is a knock itself, but as a QB it's a deal breaker... and for a player who already had doubts about whether he could play at that position in the NFL...
That's a conversation Braxton definitely needs to have with some people. I don't know to what extent players are allowed to receive such advice from those involved with the NFL, but it's not just an issue of JT vs. Braxton at QB.
There is also the issue of continuity imo. Next year is *the* year to make an NC run, with so many players returning. And while JT is getting a lot of credit for doing the easy stuff well against subpar defenses, this is the most balanced the offense has looked during Urban's time. JT is a part of that... I don't think we'd see the same balance with Braxton now or next year. It's unfortunate VTech is already gone and there won't be another decent defense/DC for awhile to gauge where things actually stand, but if this offense as a whole continues to make progress and doesn't fold then it becomes harder for me to see how this works as well reverting to the 2013 style offense in 2015. It's like starting all over again. And then doing it all over again in 2016 when we presumably go back to JT. Reverting to Braxton in that situation doesn't seem like a decision process based on "What gives us the best chance to win now?" to me.

As much as I love JT, all this talk is VERY premature. Not only is the season not even half over, there would still be spring football and summer camp. The "pace" of his statistics are not nearly as important as the pace of his progression in every facet of his game...throwing mechanics, understanding the offense, the coaches comfort level with him expanding his role, etc. Then there is the fact that the nature of Braxton's injury will at least keep him out for next spring, maybe part of the summer (it's a 9-12 month recovery)...he may not even be able to start next season with his injury. Even if it is Braxton's show when he returns, we have a MAJOR insurance policy in JT and presumably two years of him after Braxton leaves. I think it is a win-win no matter what happens but it is WAYYYYYY too early to speculate.

JT throws the ball better than Braxton.
Braxton played against some pretty bad defenses over the last three years, and he never put up back-to back 300 yard passing games. Gotta go all the way back to Troy since that feat had been accomplished. JT might be the best passer we've had since Joe Germaine.

I love Brax to death, but JT is the present AND the future. My best advice to Braxton would be to learn how to run routes. That's where his future in the NFL lies. There's no shame in that. Some of the best NFL receivers over the last decade played QB in college. I feel the same way about Pyor too. A 6'6" 240lb receiver with that kind of speed is a rare commodity in the NFL. Insisting on playing QB is potentially costing him millions.

He certainly isn't as good now as he will be by seasons end but IF JT is able to maintain his progress the rest of the season it will be JT a. It's a big if and the game to watch is MSU because if he lights up a MSU team (which will have a week to prepare) then it'll be hard to put Braxton back out there. As dynamic as Braxton is he has never put up even half way great passing stats against poor teams while JT is lighting them up.

Lets not forget that JT also has a brand new offensive line and no Carlos Hyde either. I feel that we relied on Braxton and Carlos because it was a strength but I also feel we did so because we just couldn't throw the ball. If anything that killer of a rushing thread should have made our play action offense lethal yet not so much.

I love Braxton but if JT is going to hit 6-9 different receivers a game and get the ball down field then I'm just not sure we could go back to Braxton. JT can run too don't forget. Maybe not as well as Braxton obviously but to win CHAMPIONSHIPS we need the QB of our teams to be able to do both. So far both JT and Braxton have failed against every great defense. JTs next shot is against MSU we will know then who next year's qb will be

If Miller isn't injured we don't lose to VT and we're absolutely killing everyone else. JT is not going "light up" MSU, despite MSU no longer having their "no fly zone" secondary. And JT is still learning to lead...did you see Meyer screaming at him "Take charge!", twice?

Presumable one year after he leaves. He's a RS freshman already. Can't redshirt him again. And so far he's showing potential to be able to leave early

Some times it just all comes together for an athlete. Opportunity meets talent and desire for success.
This young team is maturing and it's starting QB is getting help to succeed. This is certainly a case where a redshirt year was a huge help in development. Like we've seen with the recent Heisman winners. Both were redshirts before they had a big year that propelled them to prominence. Not saying he's ever going to win a Heisman, but he's meshing with all the developing guys on offense. And we now see the power of a (almost) fully operational Death Star! Uh....er.....you get the idea.

I am hoping that J T has one of his finest games against the Terps this Saturday. This will be his second away game and I think his development since then, will be much improved.

Starting the BIG ten season, as an away game, is always a huge challenge. Lets hope that Barrett and the rest of the Buckeyes are really up for this one
