Center R.J. Umberger (Official Thread)

R.J. Umberger -- Philadelphia

Think Flyers and you think Derian Hatcher, Peter Forsberg, Mike Knuble, Simon Gagne, Eric Desjardins. The big guns. But if the Flyers are to make good on preseason predictions that they are a Stanley Cup threat, they need someone to step out of the shadows, especially if Forsberg continues his pattern of intermittent play. Well, how about Umberger? A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., who spent three years at Ohio State University, the 6-foot-2, 200-pound center fits the Flyer mold of being larger than life and tougher than nails, but he has also surprised with his offensive contributions. The 23-year-old, taken with the 16th pick in the 2001 draft, has 10 goals and seven assists over his last 21 games. The rookie finished the campaign with 20 goals and a plus-9 rating, centering a youthful but skilled line that includes Jeff Carter and Niko Dimitrakos. Umberger could figure prominently, if surprisingly, into any success the Flyers have against Buffalo and beyond.

though hes nto expected to play in game 2 after being knocked unconscious in game 1. should be back for game 3.

Flyers 5, Sabres 4 — Philadelphia’s R.J. Umberger bounced up from a hard hit that sidelined him earlier in the series and deflated visiting Buffalo with a clutch shot last night.
Umberger, an Ohio State product, scored the go-ahead goal midway through the third period, helping the Flyers even their first-round playoff series.
Peter Forsberg had two goals and a sensational assist, and Petr Nedved and Eric Desjardins also scored for the Flyers, who won their second straight game after a humiliating six-goal loss Monday.
Game 5 of the best-of-seven series is Sunday in Buffalo. The Sabres won both games at home, including an 8-2 victory in Game 2 after a double-overtime win in the opener.
Daniel Briere scored twice and Thomas Vanek and Mike Grier had goals for the Sabres.
Robert Esche had 26 saves, including several during oddman rushes for Buffalo.
Umberger was knocked woozy by Brian Campbell’s heavy check in Game 1 and missed the next game. But the rookie bounced back to score his first playoff goal.
Umberger carried the puck from his blue line into Buffalo’s zone and took a slap shot from the right circle that squirted under goaltender Ryan Miller’s right arm. It was one of the few bad goals allowed by Miller in the series

rj is playing like a horse in the playoffs.
rj is a rfa and after making 1.25 this year should see a healthy pay raise.

honestly with the flyers payroll issues. i think rj doesnt end up in philly. he has earned himself a healthy pay raise for a guy a coupl weeks ago who was demoted to 4th line duty.
